Delivering the NZ Improv Festival and supporting Aotearoa's improv scene

Über uns

In 2015 the New Zealand Improvisation Trust was established to oversee the management and delivery of the New Zealand Improv Festival, and as of 2023 is a registered charity. The purpose of the Trust is to represent the New Zealand improvisation community on a national scale by advocating for improvisation as an art form within and amongst the arts and theatre community in New Zealand. Representation within New Zealand includes (but is not limited to): - contributing to Creative New Zealand and Ministry for Culture and Heritage discussions to promote improvisation as an art form; - participating in and conducting research and other forms of information gathering activities about improvisation as an art form; - engaging in and leading public conversations about improvisation as an art form. The Trust is committed, in attaining its purposes, to: - supporting, creating and presenting work that is accessible, diverse, and respectful of our practitioners and our audience; and - maintaining the highest standards of professionalism and integrity. In short, we love improv, we serve the Aotearoa improv community, and we deliver one heck of a festival.

  • The Festival team for the New Zealand Improv Festival 2024 are busy behind the scenes putting together the programme for this year's Festival, and they're incredibly excited for what's in store. Here's a snapshot: Curious what amazing shows you can see? The incredible workshops you can take? The fascinating panels you can hear? All will be revealed when we release the programme on Thursday 1 August. Put that date in your diaries! That's also when earlybird registrations will open (they close Sunday 1 September). Last year almost every workshop sold out during earlybird registrations, so make sure you get your spot!

  • Nice post from Emma Brittenden - I wonder how much of this relates to corporate/day to day non performing work too!

I've taught improv comedy for two decades now, and I often share the metaphor of the cliff edge with students. The cliff edge is a scary place to be, because below it are sharp rocks and hungry sharks. It's completely normal to find excuses to step back from the ledge and make yourself feel safer. However, as the inventor of Theatresports — Keith Johnstone — himself said, audiences don't pay money to see actors being safe. They want to see them walking right up to that edge and attempting a somersault. They get bored if they think performers are playing it safe. The closer that actors get to the cliff edge, the more audiences lean forward. It's exhilarating and cathartic for audiences because they'd never dream of being that vulnerable themselves. Of course when you're teaching, it's hard to encourage students to walk up to that cliff edge. I used to think that the answer was giving them lots of encouragement and tips and tricks, but that barely budged them an inch. Instead, it took me years to realise that they need to practise actually jumping off the cliff. In our first lesson we'd take all our fears ("they won't laugh", "I'll dry up", "I'll say the wrong thing", "I'm not charismatic", "I'll rip my pants and not know what to say") and act them out. Then, we'd practise how we could recover from them and still be loved by our audience. Essentially, we were scaling down that cliff face, inspecting the rocks and sharks and realising that they were nothing more than a giant bouncy castle. Once students knew that they were safe no matter what, THEN they suddenly started taking risks and blossoming into incredible performers. I'm a cautious person by nature, and I'm still terrified of those sharks whenever I start something new. However, I've been making a real effort this past year to lean into the terror. It's ended up culminating in an incredibly busy July, in which you can see me clowning, improvising, screen acting and performing a brand new cabaret act, all of which I'd never tried a year ago! 5 July: Dream Team (improvised comedy), Little Andromeda, https://lnkd.in/gVRSmUPJ 10 July: SOLD OUT // Feminist Clown Posse, Lyttelton Arts Festival https://lnkd.in/gJZ_unTd 11 July: May Day (short film), https://lnkd.in/gN56jNed 20 July: Omega Cabaret, Lyttelton Arts Festival https://lnkd.in/gsGpnyGK

  • So, the NZ Improv Trust board members did a thing on Sunday…inspired by the wisdom of Strategic Advisor Steven Youngblood (from Insight to Action Consulting) who set us up for a fruitful day of ideas, thoughts, discussions and ultimately results! In plain words, we had a 6 hour strategy meeting! A HUGE thank you for everyone who filled in the survey – it was often referred to throughout the day, as we made our way through the decisions that we needed to make. The most fun thing of the day and definitely one of those ‘aha moments’ was the use of 3D sculpting to create what we thought the scene was now and what we dreamed it might be in 5 years time. A++ Highly Recommended! So, so much to share with you, but we will formulate it in a pretty formatted document and share it with you all soon. We guess the one thing on our mind is, that if you are contemplating your space in the world over Christmas and think – I want to volunteer for one thing, and give them some energy, skill and be a part of growing and connecting people, then earmark NZ Improv Trust. Our plans, although ambitious, most certainly will make a difference to independent improvisors of all experience level and improv groups – but they’re still achievable – with a team… Email us if you want to be emailed with some of the opportunities: [email protected] Will share with you all soon Tai Samaeli, claire alderton, Jennifer O'Sullivan & Lisa Garrity
