We need to look after newborn parents. Launching in recognition of the UN Global Day of Parents, Gidget Foundation Australia’s NEW brand awareness campaign, "Gidget is here for you", is now LIVE. This campaign strives to underscore the need for broader community support for newborn parents, who require as much care and attention as their babies during this sometimes overwhelming transition. Every year in Australia, 100,000 expectant and new parents are impacted by perinatal depression and anxiety - that’s 1 in 5 mothers and 1 in 10 fathers. Tragically, maternal suicide is a leading cause of death amongst expectant and new mothers. Despite these confronting statistics, there's still a stigma attached to admitting one's struggles, as the early years of parenthood are often idealised as a period of pure joy. Enormous thanks to WPP and Ogilvy for this incredible work. We recently published research relating to the marine biodegradability of wool fibres and textiles (https://lnkd.in/gjKiR3XZ). The key message to take away from this is that commercially processed wool fibres readily biodegrade in the marine environment, and that wool does not produce microplastic pollution. You may be thinking “well, duh, of course” (sometimes scientists are accused of finding out stuff that people already ‘know’ but it’s usually a bit more complicated than that…). As it happens there’s not a lot of rigorous research in this space, especially related to wool fibres from textiles that have been modified during finishing in ways that could influence their biodegradability. It’s easy to forget that the wool that makes it into your high-performance base-layer garment is not just the same as when it came off the sheep! Among other things, we were pleasantly surprised to find that fibre from commercial wool fabric modified by the most common shrink-resist treatment to make it machine washable actually biodegraded more rapidly than untreated wool. So, go ahead and wash your wool socks and clothes guilt free… but of course thanks to their odour resistance you hardly ever need to wash them anyway, right? (and that’s another story) [thanks to Australian Wool Innovation who funded this research]

Data released in July from the Gender Investment Gap New Zealand report shows that for every 100 startups funded by taxpayers through the government-backed New Zealand Capital Growth Fund, just six had all-female founders, while 72 had all-male founders. The private-sector investment network Enterprise Angels showed similar numbers. While entrepreneur Jenny Rudd says that the onus for change is on VC firms, there are also steps female founders can take to give themselves the best chance of success.
