Jack Black Cancels Tenacious D Tour as Bandmate Kyle Gass Apologizes for 'Inappropriate' Trump Joke

Black also said "would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form," following longtime friend and bandmate Gass' remark

The near future of Tenacious D appears uncertain after a comment about Donald Trump made by Kyle Gass at the band's most recent show.

As seen in a fan-recorded video shared on X (formerly Twitter), Gass — who makes up one half of the musical duo that also comprises his longtime friend and collaborator Jack Black — joked about the recent assassination attempt against the former president on Sunday, July 14.

Black, 54, responded in an Instagram post on Tuesday morning, saying he "was blindsided by" Gass' comments and "would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form."

"After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold," he added. "I am grateful to fans for their support and understanding."

Gass also posted a response, beginning with, "The line I improvised onstage Sunday night in Sydney was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake."

"I don't condone violence of any kind, in any form, against anyone," he continued. "What happened was a tragedy, and I'm incredible [sic] sorry for my severe lack of judgment."

Gass concluded, "I profoundly apologize to those I've let down and truly regret any pain I've caused."

The comment from Gass came during a Tenacious D show in Sydney on Sunday, where he joked that his 64th birthday "wish" would be "don’t miss Trump next time."

Gass and Black have been friends for nearly 40 years and formed Tenacious D in 1994. The comedy-rock band has released four studio albums over the years and continues touring.

Black and Gass also starred together in 2006's feature film Tenacious D in the Pick of Destiny, as well as other projects, including a Tenacious D TV series from 1997 to 2000.

Trump, meanwhile, appeared at the 2024 Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Monday, two days following an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania campaign rally that injured his ear.

The former president was injured Saturday after gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks fired several shots at him during a rally in Butler, Pa. Once Trump was deemed okay, Republican leaders confirmed they would move forward with the convention.

Trump wore a large bandage on his injured ear Monday during the RNC. He was joined on stage by Ohio senator J.D. Vance, his newly named running mate, for the opening night of the convention.
