Council Member Joann Ariola (D-32) hosted a “Hero Story Time Beach Party” on Sunday, July 7, bringing together veterans, first responders and local kids for an engaging storytelling event at Beach 137th Street in Far Rockaway.
The event aimed to teach youngsters about the virtues of bravery, heroism and sacrifice that comes with the profession. The attendees listened to an excerpt from the book “Fireboat” by Maria Kalman and were treated to a water display from an FDNY fireboat along the coastline.
Council Member Ariola shared that the event aimed to push back against the media’s villainization of first responders and veterans. “That’s why it’s so important to reach these children at a young age and let them interact meaningfully with those who keep us safe day in and day out. In doing so, we can build foundations that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives,” she said.
Many of the local veterans and first responders shared how important it is to engage the youth in learning about helping others.
“I can’t think of too many more important opportunities to engage our youth than reading and answering questions about public safety and patriotism. Their questions are precious and a reminder that we have a duty to protect them. Look for more events in the future!,” said Thomas Sullivan, a retired U.S. Army reserve colonel.
Sullivan, who hails from Breezy Point, is a known figure in his community. In 2023 he ran as the GOP candidate against Assemblymember Stacey Pheffer Amato and lost the election following a final recount commissioned by the incumbent.
FDNY EMS Lieutenant Robertson Marc added that the Hero Story Time allows first responders to strengthen their relationship with their community. “It also offers a time to answer any questions or concerns someone may have. I’m so happy to see how invested Councilwoman Joann Ariola is in the community she serves,” he said.
