A new prehistoric creature has arrived at the Science Museum of Virginia.
Suspended from the ceiling of the “Speed” exhibit, just past the entrance, a 750-pound quetzalcoatlus sculpture now soars above the racetrack.

“This is the largest quetzalcoatlus sculpture in the world and the only one with the mouth open. It gives it a lot of life. To put it in this kind of position, at this height, you get to appreciate the colors and the awe of being underneath it like this,” said Dan Ney, the Science Museum of Virginia’s exhibits director.
“This is the largest quetzalcoatlus sculpture in the world and the only one with the mouth open. It gives it a lot of life. A quetzalcoatlus is the largest animal to have ever flown, according to paleontologists. The creature had a wingspan 33 to 36 feet, stood at 16 to 18 feet tall and weighed 450 to 500 pounds. It was a creature of astonishing speed, capable of reaching approximately 65 miles per hour in flight.

Despite its ancient origins spanning from 228-66 million years ago, the quetzalcoatlus isn’t classified as a dinosaur but as a pterosaur; “ptero” meaning wing, and “saur” meaning lizard.
The sculpture can be seen from all three floors in the museum. The wings and body measure over 37 feet wide and were delivered to the museum in a semi-trailer. The head, which has an 11 feet long beak, was delivered separately.
“As you move closer to it, you can appreciate the pycnofibers. Which are like feathers, but they are pre-feathers. They’re what covers the body. Research on the pycnofibers show that they would have had a lot of pigment and color on the body,” said Ney.

The quetzalcoatlus sculpture can be seen from all three floors in the museum.
The sculpture was designed by Blue Rhino Studios, a designer for museum exhibits based in Minnesota. Made of steel and fiberglass, the sculpture is as anatomically accurate as possible, Ney said.
“It’s one thing to see a bone (from a skeleton) and try to picture it. It’s another thing to see it in its full form. This really helps people understand what they look like. Seeing it like this is a completely different perspective,” said Jennifer Guild, communications director for the museum.
There is also a second component to the museum’s newest feature: an 18-foot tall 2D quetzalcoatlus replica that will be used for photos. The 2D quetzalcoatlus shows how the giant reptile stood and walked on all fours, using what we would consider today as elbows.
The quetzalcoatlus now shares the limelight with the SR-71 Blackbird supersonic aircraft in the “Speed” exhibition, a juxtaposition of prehistoric marvels and modern engineering. The exhibit explores motion and time across science and technology. The popular interactive light race that travels along the ceiling will be updated to include the quetzalcoatlus, Ney said.

Despite its ancient origins spanning from 228-66 million years ago, the quetzalcoatlus isn’t classified as a dinosaur but as a pterosaur; “ptero” meaning wing, and “saur” meaning lizard.
“The two objects are in conversation with each other, they mimic each other,” said Ney. Having both the SR-71 and the quetzalcoatlus displayed in one room combines the pre-historic with the present, as well as the natural with the mechanical, Ney said.
To welcome the new addition, the theme for Science After Dark on May 10 will be Prehistoric Party. From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the museum will host paleontologist related hands-on-activities like making your own pterosaur that can glide through the air, fossil hunting, rock layer games and science storytelling.
The quetzalcoatlus sculpture cost a little more than $100,000. It was paid for by private funds through the museum’s foundation. Guild says that visitors expect to see dinosaurs at a science museum, “But we don’t like to do what is expected,” she said.
“We added the Quetzalcoatlus as a way to showcase a prehistoric creature that isn’t a dinosaur, but that is still as dramatic, impressive and awe-inspiring, which is what we feel like people appreciate about those ancient animals. There is real power in being able to deliver that moment of discovery and delight for guests of all ages,” said Guild.

One of Richmond's youngest ghost signs is for King's Fish Market at 12 E. Marshall St. in Jackson Ward. King's closed at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the building itself is boarded up, but the sign remains as a testament to what once was.

Across the street from historic St. John’s Church stands one of Richmond’s more recognizable ghost signs. The “Uneeda Biscuit” campaign helped bring the National Biscuit Co.'s crisp, 5-cent soda crackers to the public with signs painted in cities across the country. Later, the company would consolidate into Nabisco.

At Venable and Mosby streets, a 19th-century building welcomes customers looking for dry cleaning services. On its side, a sign reads: “Take Milam for Pure Blood Guaranteed Ask your Druggist.” Dr. James Milam established the Milam Medicine Co. in his hometown of Danville in the early 1900s. He claimed he had discovered a cure-all for everything from rheumatism to asthma to cancer.
