The Science of Cities Symposium (SOCS) which took place on the first day of the World Cities Summit in June 2024 was attended by over 200 delegates. Bringing together international academic researchers, urban practitioners and industry experts, #SOCS is a platform to share scientific knowledge, novel research methodologies and insights on tackling current and emerging urban challenges. The first of two panels at SOCS, themed “Science of Climate Adaptive Cities”, was opened by Professor Lily Kong from Singapore Management University. It also featured two keynote presentations by Professor Thomas Schroepfer from Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) and Singapore-ETH Centre, and Professor Barbara Norman from University of Canberra, five other research presenters, and concluded with an engaging moderated panel discussion. Set up in 2008 by the Ministry of National Development and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, the Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) has as its mission “to distil, create and share knowledge on liveable and sustainable cities”. CLC’s work spans three main areas – Research, Capability Development & Advisory, and Knowledge Platforms. Through these activities, CLC hopes to provide urban leaders and practitioners with the knowledge and support needed to make our cities better.

CLC participated in the High-Level Forum on Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships (HLF-MSP) 2024, held in Bali, from 1 – 3 September. HLF-MSP 2024 seeks to further collaborations, facilitate dialogues, and accelerate collective action by bringing together Government leaders, multilateral development banks, and international and private sector organisations. This year, discussions centred around the theme “Strengthening Multi-Stakeholder Partnerships for Development: Towards Transformative Change”. During the conference, Professor Bambang Susantono, the Presidential Special Envoy for International Cooperation on Nusantara Capital, conducted focus group discussions with international partners. Feedback from these would be included in recommendations to Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia, on how Ibu Kota Nusantara(Nusantara Capital City, IKN) can enhance international partnerships and cultivate an attractive investment environment. As part of our close working relationship with Nusantara Capital City, which was further cemented through an MOU in 2023, CLC was invited to be part of these group discussions on knowledge sharing and capacity building. We look forward to a continued collaboration with our counterparts in all Indonesian cities. Wen Cong Yeon #clcsg #urban #cities #sustainablecities #liveablecities #resilientcities

The Dementia Friendly Neighbourhoods Project received Minister’s Award at the 2024 Ministry of National Development Singapore, National Day Observance Ceremony. Driven by CLC, the Agency for Integrated Care (Singapore), and the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), the Dementia-Friendly Neighbourhoods Study is Singapore’s first evidence-based study on dementia-friendly neighbourhoods (DFNs) developed through first-person insights from persons living with dementia and their caregivers. The Study validated design principles and guidelines that respond to Singapore’s unique high-density, high-rise urban and socio-cultural context; cutting across multiple sectors to shift mindsets, harmonise government-wide approaches, and improve processes to create a dementia-friendly environment through environmental audits and stakeholder engagement. This grounds-up community-based research study culminated in the unveiling of dementia-friendly infrastructure prototypes in Yio Chu Kang constituency, launched by Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong in Dec 2023. The DFN Research Report and a DFN Design Guide were also produced based on study findings. CLC would like to thank all our fellow stakeholder agencies Building and Construction Authority, Housing & Development Board, National Parks Board, Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA) and MOH Office for Healthcare Transformation (MOHT), and our community partners, especially the Yio Chu Kang constituency, Ang Mo Kio Town Council, Thye Hua Kwan Moral Charities, AWWA Ltd, and Star Learners for their contribution and support of the project. Singapore hosted a week-long capability development programme for officials from 8 fellow small island-states in the Pacific Island Region. This is the first installment of a three-year modular programme under the Singapore-Pacific Resilience and Knowledge Sharing (SPARKS) Package focused on 'Climate Resilience and Urban Sustainability'. Organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Centre of Liveable Cities (CLC), this programme is designed as a platform to inspire innovative solutions, foster strategic partnerships, and empower leaders with strategic approaches and insights needed to navigate the complexities of climate change. The programme offers a practitioner-based curriculum that connects policy with practical applications based on Singapore’s development experiences. We look forward to more members of the Pacific Island region joining us as we build resilient and sustainable island-homes. The City Network for the LKY World City Prize (LKYWCP Network) was inaugurated on 3 June at the World Cities Summit (WCS) 2024. The Network is envisioned as a community of practice for urban leaders and practitioners to collaborate on projects and provide a platform for global dialogue on urban issues. Their collaborative efforts were kickstarted with the first Knowledge Forum at the WCS 2024. The Knowledge Forum brought together representatives from the seven Laureate founding members of the Network to reflect on the urban challenges that their respective cities have tackled over the last decade and to take on a future-oriented perspective to discuss the ones that will impact their future. The 20 Special Mention cities that have been recognised by the LKYWCP over the years have also been invited to join the Network. Urban Redevelopment Authority of Singapore (URA) and Centre for Liveable Cities (CLC) will serve as the Network Secretariats. The final session of a three-part Roundtable series on the Future of CBDs study was conducted by CLC and Arup at the World Cities Summit2024. This roundtable expanded the conversation on CBD rejuvenation to stakeholders from around the world to obtain global perspectives on how cities are reimagining their future downtowns. The session was represented by 21 city leaders and industry experts from cities across the world from Glasgow, Mumbai to Sydney. It also built on the newly launched e-report titled "The Future of CBDs: Perspectives from 6 APAC Cities", which consolidates findings on common challenges and aspirations for future CBDs from six cities in the Asia Pacific region, namely Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Kong, Singapore, Sydney and Tokyo. The insights from this roundtable captured in these illustrations will help supplement CLC’s ongoing research on how Singapore and other cities are striving to develop competitive, attractive and resilient downtowns for the future. CLC is proud to have contributed to the Bloomberg Dynamic Cities Dashboard which was launched earlier this year. This data-driven dashboard aims to be a dynamic tool supporting city and business leaders in pursuit of a more holistic approach to urban development. It was designed to highlight important elements of urban living in cities, regardless of size, with progress measured and tracked over time to enable productive change. CLC’s Executive Director Hugh Lim has been a member of the Bloomberg New Economy Cities Council since its inception in May 2021, alongside other global thought leaders. Through his membership, CLC provided inputs, and feedback for the Dashboard, as well as both Singapore and overseas case studies. We also worked with our sister agency the National Parks Board in presenting a case study on Cities In Nature. We look forward to contributing more towards this very significant tool for global cities. https://lnkd.in/gZRZV9Zf
