Cape Cod Baseball League roundup: Hyannis Harbor Hawks win games against league's best

The Hyannis Harbor Hawks (10-6-1) held off a furious ninth inning comeback to defeat the West Division-leading Wareham Gatemen (11-5-1) 8-6 on Friday night at McKeon Park. The Harbor Hawks led 8-1 before the Gatemen scored five runs to cut the deficit to two. But Kade Brown (Sacramento State) regrouped after giving up a two-run home run to West Virginia’s Jace Rinehart (hit, two RBIs, walk) to strike out the next two batters to end the game.

Alex Lodise (Florida State) had three hits, three runs and two RBIs. Austin Peay’s Jon Jon Gazdar (hit, two walks, run) and South Florida’s Eric Snow (hit, double) had two RBIs each. Blaine Wynk (Ohio State) pitched four innings, gave up three hits, including a home run, one earned run and a walk, while Josh Och (Southern Mississippi) pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three to pick up the win.

West Virginia’s Sam White had a hit and drove in a pair of runs and scored one himself. Bobby Boser (South Florida) recorded a trio of hits, had an RBI and scored a run, while Yohann Dessureault (Stetson) hit a solo home run for the Gatemen. Braeden Sloan (TCU) dropped to a 1-2 record after pitching two innings, where he gave up two hits, two earned runs, a walk and struck out four.

Friday

Y-D Red Sox 11, Orleans Firebirds 4

The East Division-leading Red Sox (12-5) used a four-run fourth inning to break a two-all tie on their way to a win over the Firebirds (4-13). Four Red Sox players recorded two-hit games, led by Drew Burress’ (Georgia Tech), who scored four runs, recorded an RBI and crushed a solo home run. Wehiwa Aloy (Arkansas) hit a three-run blast on his only hit, while RJ Austin (Vanderbilt) had three RBIs. Michigan’s Dylan Vigue pitched 5.1 innings, gave up four hits, two earned runs, two walks and struck out five to improve to a 2-1 record.

The Firebirds had six different players record a hit, while four tallied an RBI. J-P Smith (Sacramento State) had two hits. Matthew Dalquist (UC San Diego) gave up eight hits, six earned runs, two walks and struck out three in 3.2 innings pitched to drop to an 0-2 record.

Chatham Anglers 4, Cotuit Kettleers 2

The Anglers (9-8) are the hottest team on the Cape right now after beating the Kettleers (10-7) to record their fourth-straight win. Washington’s Aiva Arquette (three hits, two RBIs, run) hit a two-run home run that gave Chatham a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Tyler Kozera (Central Florida) lasted 4.1 innings, gave up six hits, one earned run, a walk and struck out four. Gabe Van Eamon (UCONN) gave up a hit, an earned run, a walk and struck out six in relief to pick up the win. Pierce George (Alabama) earned the save.

Tanner Thach (UNC Wilmington) had four hits and scored two runs for the Kettleers. Arizona State teammates Brandon Compton (walk) and Kien Vu (hit) both had RBIs. Janzen Keisel (Oklahoma State) pitched 3.2 innings, gave up three hits, including a home run, three earned runs, two walks and struck out five in the loss.

Brewster Whitecaps 7, Falmouth Commodores 6

The Whitecaps (7-10) erased a 6-0 deficit behind Ryder Helfrick’s (Arkansas) grand slam to beat the Commodores (5-12) for their second-straight win in a shortened game. Helfrick finished the game with two hits, four RBIs and drew a walk. Miami’s Daniel Cuvet (home run, two RBIs) hit a two-run home run that tied the game, while Texas A&M’s Max Kaufer (hit and run) hit a sacrifice fly that scored the winning run. Jake Clemente (Florida) pitched 3.2 innings, gave up six hits and six runs (two earned), three walks and struck out three before Levi Huesman (Vanderbilt) shut the door by allowing just two hits and no runs in 3.1 innings to earn the win.

Donovan LaSalle (Oklahoma State) drove in two runs on a double to left field. Five different players recorded an RBI for the Commodores. Jack Seppings (Brown) surrendered four hits, four earned runs and a walk in four innings. Brett Antolick (Texas A&M) pitched an inning, gave up three earned runs, two hits and three walks in the loss.

Bourne Braves 5, Harwich Mariners 2

The Braves (6-9-2) scored five-straight runs to overturn an early one-run deficit in a win over the Mariners (9-8), who dropped back-to-back games to teams with losing records. Camden Kozeal (Vanderbilt) drove in a pair of runs, including the go-ahead run in the third inning. Clay Grady (Virginia Tech) had two hits, drove in and scored a run, drew two walks and stole a base. Braves starting pitcher Ben Bybee (Arkansas) gave up two hits, one earned run, a walk and struck out six in 4.1 innings, while Chase Meyer (West Virginia) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief to pick up the win.

Henry Godbout (Virginia) hit a solo home run and drove in a run with a double for the Mariners. Wake Forest’s Haiden Leffew pitched four innings, gave up three hits, three earned runs, a walk and struck out one in the loss that dropped him to a 1-2 record on the season.

Thursday

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 8, Y-D Red Sox 7

The Harbor Hawks (11-5) overhauled the Red Sox (9-6) with a six-run fifth inning before UC Santa Barbara’s Reed Moring (two innings, three strike outs) came on to make the save. Yarmouth-Dennis took the lead with a five-run fourth inning, which chased Iowa’s Aaron Savary (3.2 innings, two hits, three earned runs, three walks, eight strike outs) and Tulane’s Jacob Moore (1.1 innings, three hits, three earned runs, one strikeout) from the game. Mason White (Arizona) had two hits, including a three-run homer and a double, four RBIs and drew a walk, while Nick Groves (Niagara) tallied a trio of hits, scored two runs and swiped a bag. Duke’s Wallace Clark recorded a hit, two RBIs and a run scored.

Arkansas’ Wehiwa Aloy (three hits and three runs) hit three home runs off three different pitchers, including a two-run home run in the fifth inning. North Carolina’s Gavin Gallagher (hit) had a three-run home run. Micah Bucknam (LSU) pitched four innings, gave up five hits, three earned runs, one walk and struck out three, while Nolan Silver (Kennesaw State) gave up three hits, a home run, three earned runs, three walks in 1.2 innings to drop to an 0-1 record.

Wareham Gatemen 8, Bourne Braves 8

Wareham (11-4-1) and Bourne (5-9-2) played out a 10-inning stalemate after the Gatemen blew a 6-0 lead. Bourne scored four runs in the eighth inning to tie the game with Auburn product Chris Stanfield’s single driving in the tying runs on his only hit. Ethan Conrad (Marist) had two hits, an RBI, drew a walk and scored a run, while Davis Gillespie (Southern Mississippi) also had two hits, an RBI and scored. Joe Ariola (Wake Forest) and Will McCausland (Ole Miss) combined to pitch six innings, gave up six hits, including three home runs, seven earned runs, six walks, and struck out six.

Colby Turner (San Diego State), Antonio Jimenez (Central Florida) and Brendan Summerhill (Arizona) all homered for the Gatemen. Summerhill hit a three-run home run in the third inning that gave the Gatemen their 6-0 lead. The Gatemen had plenty of chances to put the game away but went 1-for-16 with runners in scoring position and left 14 on base. Florida State’s Yoel Tejeda Jr. pitched 3.1 innings, gave up three hits, four runs, including two earned, three walks and struck out six. Patrick Galle (Mississippi) surrendered three earned runs on two hits, a walk and struck out two in one inning pitched.

Cotuit Kettleers 6, Falmouth Commodores 2

The Kettleers (10-6) scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to race away from the Commodores (5-11). In what was a pitchers’ duel, the two teams combined for just seven hits and six walks. Charles Davalan (Florida Gulf Coast) scored two runs for the Kettleers. LSU’s Thatcher Hurd pitched six innings, gave up a hit, which was a home run, a walk and struck out six to pick up the win. Christian Becerra (California) earned the save, striking out three, giving up two hits and a run in 1.2 innings of work.

Harvard’s Tanner Smith gave up a hit, a run, three walks and struck out four in three innings in the loss.

Brewster Whitecaps 10, Harwich Mariners 5

Kaeden Kent (Texas A&M) had four RBIs on four hits and Brody Donay (Florida) hit a solo home run and scored twice to lift the Whitecaps (6-10) past the Mariners (9-7). Ryder Helfrick (Arkansas) recorded two hits and two RBIs. Nick Dumesnil (California Baptist) had three hits and scored three runs, while J.D. Rogers (Vanderbilt) had three hits, scored twice, tallied an RBI and drew a walk. Seth Tomczak (Cal State Fullerton) pitched five innings, gave up six hits, three earned runs, struck out five and picked up his first win.

Michael Anderson (Rhode Island) hit a two-run home run, while four Whitecaps recorded an RBI. Jack Bowery (Northeastern) gave up nine hits, five earned runs and struck out four in 4.1 innings in the loss to drop to a 1-2 record. The bats also got to Andrew Evans (Kansas State), who gave up six hits and four earned runs in 2.2 innings.

Chatham Anglers 4, Orleans Firebirds 1

The Anglers (8-8) scored two runs in both the fourth and seventh innings to beat the Firebirds (4-12). Luke Cantwell (Pittsburgh) hit a two-run home run, tallied two hits and two RBIs. Ashton Larson (LSU) had two hits, scored a run and stole a base. Chatham left three on base and went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position. Utah’s Micah Ashman pitched 5.1 scoreless innings and gave up two hits to secure the win, while Titan Hayes (Austin Peay) earned his third save by striking out all three batters in the ninth inning.

Six different players for the Firebirds had a hit. They went 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position and left six on base. Roch Cholowsky (UCLA) drove in the only run on a groundout out to the third baseman.
