Game notes: If you’re a fan of whiffs, the Tigers’ game against the Twins, set for 8:10 p.m. on Bally Sports Detroit, might be your cup of tea. Jack Flaherty’s ongoing back issue — which would be a great band name — means rookie Keider Montero will get the start for the Tigers.

The young righty was knocked around for five runs in 4⅓ innings last week by the Philadelphia Phillies, but he had a 30.1% whiff rate, inducing a franchise-record 18 swinging strikes. Montero has 11 strikeouts in 8⅔ big-league innings, taking losses in May (in a doubleheader start against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Detroit) and June (against the Phillies, also in Detroit).  He also has issued four walks and given up three homers in that limited action, a big reason why he has spent most of the season with Triple-A Toledo.

His more recent start in Triple-A, in fact, came against the Twins’ afilliate, the Saints, located across the Mississippi River in St. Paul. Montero allowed three runs over five innings, scattering three hits and four walks while picking up five strikeouts on June 21.

His opponent Wednesday, David Festa is the Twins’ No. 4 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline, as well as No. 90 overall. The righty only had a whiff rate of 14% in his MLB debut (a 13-6 win over the Diamondbacks in which he allowed five runs), but sported a 37% whiff rate, third among all Triple-A pitchers with 150 plate appearances, in 14 starts this season.

That success earned him quite the nickname in St. Paul, according to teammate Simeon Woods Richardson: "He’s the Slim Reap, man," Woods Richardson told reporters last week. "If people don’t know about him, he’s the Slim Reap." We’re a little disappointed the nickname isn’t “Uncle,” but we guess that belongs to Minnesota Wild coach John Hynes (and maybe a few other NHL coaches we could think of).
