State champs and more: South Shore High School Girls Tennis All-Scholastic team

It was a stellar spring for high school girls tennis on the South Shore.

Several teams made deep playoff runs. Pembroke won the Division 3 state championship, led by star sophomore Nicole Makarewicz. She's one of six names on this list that had undefeated seasons. Eighth-grader Sophia Lirio was another who went undefeated and helped Notre Dame Academy reach the Div. 2 state finals.

There were some dynamic duos as well. Hingham’s Gabi Magner and Sammy Price only lost two matches all season as sophomores, and in their first year playing together, Sophie Ennis and Mady Morris only lost three matches and were both named to the Patriot League All-Star teams.

Now, it’s time to highlight those who made noise on the tennis court.

FIRST TEAM 

CATALINA ABBOUD

Milton

Junior posted a 15-2 record in second singles. ... Three-time Bay State Conference All-Star made it to the Div. 2 Elite 8 in the state tournament. ... Earned high honors and is also a member of the Century Club. ... Named captain for the volleyball team. ... “Cat is a hard-working player who won’t settle for good enough,” said Milton coach Maggie Radley.

RUTH DANNISON

Pembroke

Junior had a record of 20-2 at second singles for the Div. 3 state champions. ... Has a career record of 58-6 while being a three-time Patriot League All-Star. ... “Ruth’s exceptional mental fortitude and ability to adapt mid-match enable her to overcome challenging situations, making her a consistently dominant force on the court,” said Pembroke coach Jessica Walls.

HANNAH FARBER

Oliver Ames

Completed her first undefeated season (16-0) in first singles. ... Voted unanimous MVP of the Hockomock League. ... Finished her third year in first singles and was an All-Scholastic for the past two years. ... “She rose to the challenge match after match, and never gave up when she was down,” said Oliver Ames co-coaches Danielle Erickson and Melissa Spillane.

EMMA GERLACH

Pembroke

Senior finished with a 20-2 record in third singles. ... Four-time Patriot League All-Star. ... Vice president of National Honor Society. ... Will attend Northeastern University in the fall. ... “Emma significantly strengthens the team's depth, providing essential wins that complement the other singles players,” said Pembroke coach Jessica Walls.

OLIVIA GILBERT

Marshfield

Went undefeated (19-0) in first singles as a freshman. ... Made the Round of 16 in the individual state tournament. ... Competes regularly at USTA high-level tournaments and is a three-star recruit. ... “Her tennis skills, determination and grit were a shining example for the rest of our team to follow,” Marshfield coach Melissa Whitman said.

ANNABEL KEATING

Duxbury

Senior went 15-3 in the Patriot League. ... Holds a career record of 30-14 in second singles position and first doubles as a freshman. ... Season highlighted by wins over Scituate and against Dartmouth in the playoffs. ... Will attend Boston College’s nursing program this fall.

SANYA KHADIVI

Hingham

Junior posted a 14-3 record in second singles, with a few matches played in first singles. ... Match wins against Duxbury and Pembroke helped lead her team to the best record in the Patriot League. ... Won three games in the state tournament. ... “Sanya also entered the USTA State Individual tournament this year and won a first-round match, coming back from one set down to win a dramatic super tiebreaker 10-5,” said Hingham coach Steve Berger.

Has been a part of a team that has won outright or shared the conference title in all three years. ... Member of the National Honor Society and plays on the school’s varsity volleyball team. ... “A talented shot maker and competitive player she is a pleasure to watch and to coach,” said Bridgewater-Raynham coach Bob Peterson.

SOPHIA LIRIO

Eighth grader finished the year with an undefeated record of 17-0 in second singles. ... Helped team advance to the Division 2 state final. ... Improved to a career record of 33-4. ... Competed in the 2024 USTA Individual State Tournament. ... “It was another stellar year for Sophia Lirio where she continued to dominate at second singles,” said NDA coach Joanne Healey.

GABI MAGNER AND SAMMY PRICE

Hingham

Sophomores only lost two matches in first doubles. ... Both also played matches in second and third singles with Magner posting a 16-2 record, and Price finishing at 15-2. ... “Gabi has powerful ground strokes on both sides and Sammy is a very cerebral player with strong net play, a good forehand and first serve,” said Hingham coach Steve Berger.

Sophomore completed a perfect 20-0 season in first singles, helping her team win the Div. 3 state championships. ... Has only one career loss (42-1). ... Sophomore completed the season with an 11-1 record in Patriot League play at third singles. ... Has a career record of 11-2. ... Most memorable moment was her team beating rival Hingham, winning both her matches.

CAROLINE SUTLIFFE

Duxbury

Senior finished Patriot League play with a record of 15-3 in first singles. ... Improved to career record of 73-5 in four years. Has played first singles her last three years and played third singles as a freshman.

MELODY TRAN

Milton

Sophomore captain went 16-2 overall in first singles, making it to the state quarterfinals. ... Helped team win Herget Division for the second time. ... Two-time MVP of the Herget Division. ... Made High Honors and is a member of the Century Club. ... “Her leadership has been a driving force towards our success this season,” said Milton coach Maggie Radley.

Freshman finished with a perfect 9-0 record in third singles coming off of a long-term injury. ... A Bay State Conference champion (Herget Division) and All-Star. ... Advanced to state quarterfinals and went 2-2 in first singles.

Senior held an 8-4 record in the Patriot League in first singles. ... Improved career record to 29-11. ... Best match of the season came against Notre Dame Academy, winning 7-6,6-1.

MEGAN CORRY

Thayer Academy

Senior captain had a combined record of 20-6 in singles and doubles. ... Held the team’s highest winning percentage over the last two years and was named team MVP this season.

KELLY COSTELLO

Thayer Academy

Senior captain won 18 matches with only five losses in both doubles and singles. ... Was named to the ISL All League team and heavily contributed to the team’s back-to-back Sportsmanship Awards.

HELENA DHILLON

Finished the season with a record of 11-4 in first and second singles with two different playing partners. ... Named a Patriot League All-Star and won a match at second singles.

Sophomore earned team’s first singles spot and finished with an 8-10 overall record. ... Played hard-fought matches against a three-star USTA player and former Patriot League MVP Caroline Sutliffe.

LEXI WASHBURN

Senior captain recorded a win percentage of 85 over last two seasons in first singles. ... Has been a Patriot League All-Star for three years in a row.

SOPHIE ENNIS AND MADDY MORRIS

Whitman-Hanson

Junior-sophomore duo went 13-3 in first doubles in their first year playing together. Both were voted Patriot League All-Stars. ... Took down Hingham and Duxbury, which were the top two teams in the Keenan Division.
