Must have basic knowledge of the objectives and principles of public recreation, including an understanding of activities that comprise a community recreation program. Experience in aquatic lessons and program planning. Knowledge of proper water chemical balance and equipment needed in managing an Aquatic area and Water Park. Ability to maintain records, assimilate information, create reports and present ideas and recommendations clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.  Supervisory skills necessary to develop staff and volunteers. Experience in computer applications is required. Must be able to adapt to a varied work schedule involving long hours, nights, weekends and holidays as necessary to assure successful operation of the Recreation Division. Come join a growing team and lead our Y-Spartaquatics Swim Club (YSSC)!  In recent years, YSSC has seen exceptional growth both in and out of the water.  As a team, our successes include winning the 2024 Combined Team Long Course National Champions, 2024 and 2023 Men’s YMCA Long Course National Championship, the 2021 Women’s YMCA Short Course National Championship, and the South Carolina Short Course Senior State Championships from 2020-2024.  In addition, we have seen dozens of swimmers continue in their swimming careers through scholarships at top universities all across the country. Under the direction of the Director of Competitive Swimming, and in accordance with the Christian nature and purpose of the YMCA of Greater Spartanburg, the Head Senior Coach will be an integral leader as we seek to continue our growth and success in competitive swimming.  YSSC is a registered USA Swim and National YMCA Swim team that competes in local, state, and national level swim meets.

Qualifications

Education and Certifications –A 4-year college degree is required.  ASCA level 3 or higher preferred.

Experience – Five or more years of competitive swimming coaching experience, YMCA experience a plus, with a background in supervising and developing swimmers, coaches, and volunteers.  Must be safe sport certified.

Essential Functions

• Assists in directing the operation of the YSSC program, including coaching and training of swimmers, supervision of coaches, coordination of volunteers, and management of all aspects of meets.
• Supports the mission of the YMCA through program, staff, and volunteer development and leadership.
• Ensures all certifications are up to date for staff.
• Monitors program registrations and program retention to ensure quality programming is being implemented and promoted throughout the entire YSSC program.
• Organizes the year-round meet calendar and ensures all details related to registration is properly coordinated for each meet.
• Engages with other aquatics staff to ensure proper coordination is in place for connecting swimmers from YMCA swim lessons to placement on swim team with the appropriate timing.
• Ensures a safe and supportive environment exists for all participants, coaches, and volunteers.
• Assists in the financial development activities of the swim team program to meet or exceed the annual campaign goal.
• Work directly with the Head Coach to plan the programming of the Y-Spartaquatics Swim Club.
• Assist in planning for seasonal as well as long term goals for the swim team as well as their specific practice groups.
• Lead Coach for at least 2 practice groups within the Senior and Junior programs
• Manage all aspects of the YSSC Senior Program at the Middle Tyger YMCA: Including staffing, schedule, curriculum, and any meets offered to YSSC swimmers.
• Provide parent/swimmer communication through phone, email, and website. Regular updates will be provided on a regular basis.
• Assist in all aspects on meet management. Including entries, setup, and breakdown.
• Assist with Social Media
• Continue to make YSSC’s social media presence the benchmark for SC Swimming
• Attend all swim team staff meetings and training opportunities as requested.
• Document daily attendance and training plans.
• Roster and retention planning for all Junior and Senior training groups.
• Volunteer for appointments with SC Swimming, USA Swimming, YMCA Swimming, ASCA or other professional group

Position: Site Lead Coach

Compensation: Starting at ~$55K based on experience. 

Reports to: Head Coach

Position Overview: Under the direction of the Head Coach, the Site Lead Coach is responsible for leading and coaching the competitive swimming program at one of Steel City Aquatics sites. They are responsible for creating and executing a strategy for the continued success of all swimmers and developing the skills and talent of the coaches.

Key Responsibilities:

• Foster a dynamic and collaborative relationship with the Head Coach, providing essential feedback and input on organizational requirements and needs, while effectively communicating progress in achieving the vision and fulfilling key responsibilities
• Assist in the development, design, and implementation of a coaching program that ensures consistent standards across levels of the entire competitive team and can be recorded in the coaches
• Recruit, Supervise, and Evaluate direct reports
• Establish and lead direct reports’ growth and development plan for appropriate direct reports
• Hold appropriate 1:1 meetings to ensure the proper growth of direct reports
• Assist the Head Coach in planning and managing staff meetings to ensure appropriate communication, planning and skills development takes place 
• Implement daily workouts, ensuring they fit within the club Coaches Handbook as well as the seasonal plans
• Collaborate with the coaching staff to identify individual strengths, areas for improvement, and goal-setting strategies
• Track and evaluate the progress of swimmers within the age group program and specific training groups
• Develop and maintain healthy relationships with the swimmers, their parents, and training groups as a whole
• Conduct swim team evaluations for prospective athletes
• Encourage swimmers to attend and actively participate in swim meets
• Attend swim meets as requested and provide swimmers on-deck coaching support
• Oversight of any administrative duties for the site and group lead
• Oversight of meet management from the swimmer’s perspective and working closely with the meet director to organize and deliver successful meets
• Oversight of regular communications with members/families
• Follow all Steel City and USA Swimming policies including SafeSport as well as ensure direct reports are compliant
• Undertake other tasks and responsibilities as required to contribute to the team’s success and organizational objectives

Skills and Qualifications:

• Minimum 5 years of coaching experience
• Proven leader and developer of coaching staff
• Knowledge of designing and implementing seasonal training plans
• Demonstrated ability in administrative skills and understanding of budgets
• Solid interpersonal communication skills and demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with athletes of all ages as well as staff and families
• Current USA Swimming Coach Member certifications and good standing
• ASCA level 3 or higher certification, preferred
