Petitioning For Sarah Sjostrom To Swim A SCY 50 Freestyle Before Retirement

Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom is one of the best sprinters in history and is arguably the best sprinter in the last decade. Being from Sweden, Sjostrom has not had a chance to swim a short course yards (SCY) 50 freestyle. We are petitioning for Sjostrom to swim a SCY 50 freestyle before retirement.

Sign the Petition Here

The 30 year old Sjostrom currently holds the long course meters (LCM) 50 and 100 freestyle and 50 butterfly world records. She also is the former world record holder in the 100 butterfly.

She also has had success in the short course meters (SCM) pool, being the former world record holder in the 50 and 100 freestyle events as well. Sjostrom’s turns and underwaters are powerful enough that she has had the success in both pools. What might her success be in the “bathtub” pool?

With her dominance in both the long course and short course meters sprint events, Sjostrom surely has the potential to make history in the short course yards pool as well. Could she be the 2nd woman to break the 20-second mark in a flying start 50 freestyle? Could she break Gretchen Walsh‘s record of a 20.37 in the flat start 50 freestyle?

Sign the petition above if you support the potential for Sjostrom to make history, etching her name into the records books once again. Sjostrom is currently preparing for her 5th Olympics after first competing at the 2008 Beijing Games.

What REALLY ought to happen is for Sarah to show up for the only yards-meet in Sweden – Rosenlundsbadet Sprint Yards in Jönköping in September. If she decides to come we promise to throw in a significant cash reward for a world record!

A more meaningful petition is to the NCAA to change it to SCM for the championship meets

Or even better, to LCM! Australia, or any other nation for that matter, would never stand a chance against the USA again. But I know, it’s unfortunately never going to happen…

What would be there for her? It takes training….

Sweden is one of the few countries outside the US that actually hosts a meet in SCY. Can’t remember the name of it, but it’s usually in September, early October.

It’s our meet! It’s hosted in one of the biggest facilities in Sweden, hosted by one of the strongest clubs.
She’ll get great conditions to break a yards record!

For her to want to do this she’d have to feel like having a decent yards time is something that’s missing from her resume. I don’t think anyone outside the US has that feeling.

The US Open is being held in yards this year. Maybe Arena can sponsor their athletes with performance incentives to show up and swim fast. Manaudou for one would absolutely KILL in yards. Wouldn’t it be fun to see how close to 17.6 he could get? Finke vs Paltrinieri in the 1650. Sarah vs everybody.

That would be a waist of her time, although a 19.9

Fyi, Sarah is NOT the wr holder in 50 fly SCM, instead fellow-Swede Therese Alshammer is (from the floating swimsuit era).
