Josh Taylor and Jack Catterall landed a combined 338 punches during their thrilling rematch on Saturday night in Leeds.

Catterall avenged the heartache of his controversial points loss to Taylor two years ago as he got his hand raised via unanimous decision with scorecards of 117-111, 117-111, 116-113 in his favour.

'El Gato' boxed well early doors but as the rounds drew on Taylor began to claw his way back into the contest.

In the end, the boxing world was divided over the result although few saw it as wide in Catterall's favour as the judges did.

Taylor was left disheartened by the decision while his promoter Bob Arum labelled the scorecards a 'total disgrace'.

CompuBox has since released the punch stats for the fight which show just how close it really was.

Overall, Catterall threw 40 more punches than Taylor and outlanded him by 14 over the distance.

Catterall scored 88 jabs to Taylor's 60 but the Scotsman got the better of the power punch exchange by 102 to 88.

The fierce rivals were separated by three punches or less in six of the 12 rounds.

Meanwhile, they both outlanded each other 5 rounds a piece with the second and 12th stanzas being even for total punches.

In the immediate aftermath of the fight, Taylor called for a rubber match: “I thought it was a great fight. Fair play to Jack. He was a better fighter than the first fight.

"But listen, I thought I just nicked the fight, to be fair. I thought I just nicked it.

"It was a close fight, but the controversy in the first fight played into the judges’ hands. But I think I just nicked the fight there, to be honest. Listen, fair play to Jack. He won the fight. Let’s do a third one.

“If he wants to go and challenge for bigger fights, he deserves it. But it’s one apiece, so let’s do it. Let’s do a trilogy.

Jack Catterall says he would welcome fights against Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney or Teofimo Lopez after facing Josh Taylor

“There always was [respect]. It’s the respect of the fighters. That’s a winning nature, and a competitive nature, and a will to win. There’s always respect. Even with people you dislike, there’s always respect.”

But Catterall wants to move on to pastures new and fight Teofimo Lopez for the WBO and Ring Magazine light-welterweight titles after being denied the opportunity to win all the belts against Taylor last time out.

“I thought I won the first fight clearly and didn’t get the decision,” added Catterall.

“Although I thought I won the fight tonight clearly, you never know, some of the scorecards you see.

"So to get the decision, rightfully so, was a big relief for me. To win the world title has always been the dream for me.

"We didn’t get the undisputed world titles [against Taylor] and that’s fine. That chapter’s been written now.

"I want that world title fight now. [Lopez] beat Taylor before I did, now I’ve had the win over him and I want to prove I’m better than [Lopez].”
