Reservations Recommended

Jan. 1, 2024 - We strongly encourage you to purchase day passes in advance for the summer months, weekends, school breaks and holidays. Day passes often sell out throughout the summer.

Sept. 3, 2024 - Access to the interior of the park is limited to high-clearance 4WD vehicles only.  The River District is open to all vehicles, however the Arenosa Campground is only accessible by 4WD.

Aug. 22, 2024 - The Piney Hill Spur (Yellow Trail) is closed through Oct. 1 for trail maintenance work. 

Sept. 18, 2023 - The main lake is closed to prevent erosion as plants re-establish after construction. Fishing is available at Lake Mina.

Hydrilla Alert

July 12, 2024 - The lake is infested with hydrilla, an invasive plant that creates large mats of vegetation across the surface of the water. We are working on controlling and removing the hydrilla, but it can affect swimming, fishing and boating. Contact the park office with questions.

Please remember to always clean, drain, and dry your boat!

Flooded Areas

May 2, 2024 - Parts of the North and South day-use areas, including the swim area and Shoreline ADA Trail, are flooded. The areas are not closed, but please use extreme caution. 

Phone Issues

Dec. 4, 2023 - We are experiencing intermittent phone outages. If you are unable to reach us and need immediate help, please call the Customer Service Center during regular business hours: (512) 389-8900. 

Visiting the Park

• We recommend reserving day passes for weekends and holidays. If your plans change, please modify or cancel your reservation so someone else can visit.
• Trails close for wet weather and maintenance. Call the park or check our Facebook page for updates before visiting.
• Argentine ants have been identified in some of our campsites. These invasive ants do not sting. Be prepared to treat around your vehicle and camping equipment. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is working to reduce the number of ants without harming the park's natural resources.

South Shore Boat Ramp Closed

Oct. 4, 2023 - The boat ramp at the South Shore unit is closed due to low lake levels.

Boat Ramp Use Limited

April 1, 2024 - The boat ramp is closed to boats requiring a trailer to load or unload due to low water level. Only kayaks and hand loaded/unloaded watercraft are allowed to use the ramp. Contact the park for more information. 

Scheduled Closures

The Coyote Run trails will be closed Dec. 7-22, 2024.

The Doctor's Creek Unit and the South Sulphur Unit will be closed from noon on Jan. 3 to noon on Jan. 6, 2025.

Dock Closure

May 10, 2024 - The floating dock in the Heron Harbor Day-use Area at the South Sulphur Unit is closed. The walkway to the dock has been removed due to damage. Fishing access from the wall is still open.

Trail Alert

Trails close to horseback riders after rainfall. Check conditions before you come by calling the park. 

Low Lake Level

Sept. 11, 2024 - The lake level is extremely low. The swimming area, fishing pier and boat ramp are closed. Contact the park for updates.

Museum Closed

Sept. 1, 2024 - The museum at park headquarters is closed for renovations.

Sidewalk Project

June 17, 2024 - Part of the day-use area will be closed starting in mid-August for a sidewalk improvement project. The swim/beach area and the back deck of the pavilion will remain open.

You may hear construction noise. Please observe all signs for safety. The project is expected to be completed in January 2025.

Scheduled Closure

The Limpia Canyon Primitive Area will be closed from 8 a.m. Oct. 5 to 8 a.m. Oct. 13, 2024. Only permitted hunters will be allowed on these dates.

Partial Trail Closure

Jan. 27, 2023 - The Indian Lodge trailhead is closed due to renovations at Indian Lodge and can be accessed from the Montezuma Quail Trail only. The trail is 1.5 miles round trip from that intersection. 

Renovations Closure

Feb. 6, 2024 - Indian Lodge, including the Black Bear Restaurant, is closed for renovations. Reservations for 2024 will not be available until a reopening date has been set.

Utility Work Notice

Sept. 4, 2024 - Utility work on the Armadillo Hill Camping Loop will continue through mid-2025. The restrooms and the dump station in the loop are closed. Restrooms are available in other areas.

License Sales

June 6, 2024 - Fishing and hunting licenses are not available now.

Firewood Quarantine

May 16, 2024 - This county is under a quarantine to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer to other areas of the state. This means movement of firewood is restricted.

Please buy firewood where you burn it to prevent the spread of diseases and pests.

Kayak Rentals

Sept. 13, 2024 - Kayak rentals will be unavailable at headquarters tomorrow Sept. 14. Three kayaks are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the kayak vending machine. The machine takes credit cards. Canoes can still be rented from headquarters.

Reservations Recommended

Reservations are recommended (even for those with park passes). Reserve online or call the Customer Service Center before you visit. Spanish-speaking agents are available at the CSC. Carry your pass (either a printed or digital version) with you while in the park.

Construction Notice

Aug. 2, 2024 - A repair project on the scenic overlook on Park Rd. 29 will begin this fall. The project will limit access to the south side of the park (Old Garner). Pecan Grove and Oakmont camping loops and cabins will be closed from December 2024 to February 2025. Check back for updates. 

Paddling Trail Dock Closed

Sept. 6, 2024 - The dock is closed due to river rise after recent rainfall. It will reopen when the river subsides.

Dump Station Closure

March 13, 2024 - The park's dump station is closed.

• The campground is closed Tuesday through Thursday nights.
• Campsite availability is limited Friday through Monday nights.

Storm Damage

Trailway Bridges Out

May 1, 2024 - Two bridges on the Trailway have been washed out, one over Nails Creek and one over Yegua Creek near the Newman Bottom parking area. Please reach out to either Nails Creek or Birch Creek headquarters for more information before heading out on the Trailway.

Argentine Ants

Argentine ants, an invasive species, have been identified in some campsites in the park. The ants do not sting.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is working with experts to reduce the ants without harming natural resources. Before leaving, thoroughly inspect your vehicle, RV, camping gear and other equipment; if you see the ants, please notify park staff immediately and they can offer guidance for treating. Camping Closure

Aug. 28, 2024 – The Walnut Ridge Unit bridge is down to one lane. Please proceed with caution. Check back for updates.

No Phones

Closures 

May 7, 2024 - The lower part of the park is flooded and has been closed off to any through traffic. This area has been closed for public since 2015. Texas Highway 236 is open. Please visit drivetexas.org for the latest road conditions for the surrounding area.

Swimming and fishing are unavailable until flood repairs and cleanup are completed.

High Tides & Flooding

Sept. 12, 2024 - Beach access is limited and may require driving or walking through standing salt water due to high tides from Hurricane Francine. Beach camping, the parking lot and the beach access roads are closed due to flooding. Check back for updates.

Beach Driving

Only those with 4x4 vehicles should drive on the beach due to soft sand. Otherwise, you should park in the day-use parking lot to avoid getting stuck.

Scheduled Closure

Most of the park will be closed Jan. 26 to Feb. 28, 2025, for a construction project on Park Road 11. All areas on the south side of the San Marcos River will be closed including all water/electric campsites, the main trail system, showers, the Refectory building/parking and picnic area. Limited day use and tent camping sites will remain open near Oxbow Lake. Contact the park or check back for updates.

Summer Trail Safety

• Temperatures in the canyon are often 5-10 degrees hotter than on the rim.  Outdoor activities during this time can be dangerous. Stay safe!
• Avoid hiking during the heat of the day.
• Stay on trails.
• Drink 1 liter of water per person, per mile.
• Hike with friends.
• The following trails will close from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on days when the National Weather Service issues a heat advisory. Please observe these closures for your safety.

Park Closed for Construction

Jan. 22, 2021 - The park is closed to all public access as road construction has begun. Check back for updates.

• Campsites with electricity and water, as well as the Twin Falls Trail, are closed through Feb. 28, 2025, due to a wastewater treatment plant project.

Restroom Closure

April 22, 2024 - The Bathhouse restroom in the Chapparal camping loop is closed. Portable restrooms are available outside the restroom and showers are available in other areas of the park.

Firewood Quarantine

May 16, 2024 - This county is under a quarantine to prevent the spread of the emerald ash borer to other areas of the state. This means movement of firewood is restricted.

Please buy firewood where you burn it to prevent the spread of diseases and pests.

Aug. 20, 2024 - The park is open, but some areas are closed due to flooding and storm damage:

• Isle Du Bois and Johnson Branch units - some trails and  campgrounds 
• Greenbelt - U.S. 380 access, Horse Blaze Trail and all trails south of the Overlook
• Boat Ramps - Sanger boat ramps

Reservoir Levels Notice

Sept. 4, 2024 - Due to recent rains, the lake's level has risen and it has reopened for boating. The lake is near 8 percent capacity and one boat ramp is open. Watch for debris that may have washed in during rain events. 

Dump Station Closure

Feb. 6, 2024 - The Bald Eagle Campground Dump Station is closed for maintenance. The dump station in the North Concho Equestrian Campground as well as one on the south side of the park in the Red Arroyo Campground are open.

Sticker Bur Alert

We have lots of sticker burs in and around our campsites right now. Wear good shoes and be cautious with pets and children.

North Shore Gate Locked

Check in at the South Shore entrance (362 S. FM 2288) to get the gate code for the North Shore.

Park Closure

Sept. 12, 2024 - The park is closed due to a tropical storm. We will reopen for day use and RV camping on Sept. 14.  Check back for updates.

Park Closures

The Visitor Center and Park Headquarters will be closed on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, from 8 a.m. to noon, for staff training. Please use the self-pay kiosk, located in front of the Park Headquarters building, during this closure.

The Roadrunner Flat camping loop will be closed for construction beginning January 2025. Check back for updates.

Sept. 9, 2024 - The John Jacob Observation tower is closed for maintenance. Check back for updates. 

Construction Notices

May 18, 2024 - Campgrounds, trails and bird blinds are open and accessible. 

• Construction continues on a replacement of the low-water crossing at the park's entrance. Access to the river for tubing, paddling, fishing and swimming is available. Watch for signs or ask park headquarters about temporary river access points. River portage around construction is clearly marked.
• Expect construction noise, construction traffic on the roadways, and possible road or lane closures at the park.

Trails Over Texas Run

Trails Over Texas is hosting a run at the park from 4 p.m. Sept. 14 to 2 a.m. Sept. 15, 2024. Expect runners throughout the trail system and more visitors than usual.

Jan. 1, 2024 - Construction of a new park headquarters and Visitors Center next to the Cedar Point Camping Area is underway. Campers in Cedar Point should expect construction noise during daylight hours after 7 a.m.
