Avon Needs Trees

This summer, our first ever Woodland Skills course came to a close and what an amazing journey it has been! 🌳✨ The course has been hugely successful. Of the 13 graduates, 4 of them have gone into jobs in the green sector so far, and 5 have secured funding for further training in horticulture and arboriculture related short courses. 💚 As we prepare to recruit our next round of cohorts, our Volunteer and Skills Co-ordinator Debs Hoy reflects on our first ever Woodland Skills course, and reveals more about our plans for our next programme, and importantly, how you can get involved! Our team of volunteers are the heart of Avon Needs Trees, and our work creating new, permanent woodlands simply would not be possible without their dedication. Last week Route One joined us for a brilliant tree care day at Great Avon Wood! 🌳 ✨ The team did a fantastic job of tending to our young trees, all while enjoying the sunshine and gorgeous views across the site. 🌞 🦋 It's so encouraging to see how many of our saplings are thriving! Earlier this week we celebrated the opening of our brand new community tree nursery at Great Avon Wood! 🌳🍾✨ Metro Mayor and MP Dan Norris, neighbours, and local volunteers joined us in the sunshine to enjoy speeches, cake, and a walk to take in the view across the recently planted Great Avon Wood, and the ancient Publow Oak. We're really excited to be able to raise our own saplings to help supply trees for Great Avon Wood, as well as our newest project Lower Chew Forest, and other woods in the area! Thank you to our amazing team and community of local volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this new community tree nursery happen. 💚 We also want to thank the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority who funded the delivery of the Great Avon Wood project including the nursery, and More Trees BANES who contributed 50% of the build cost, and all their support and expertise. This summer we completed the first round of our Woodland Skills training programme, a new Avon Needs Trees course designed to increase employment opportunities for adults who want to work in the green sector. 🌳🦋🌿 This programme employs a combination of practical on-site learning experiences and talks from industry professionals on a range of topics relating to woodland creation, tree care and land management. Our first group of participants enjoyed a range of fantastic workshops with experts from National Trust, Bristol City Council, British Natural History Consortium, Forest of Avon Trust and Bristol Avon Rivers Trust to name a few. We're proud to say that the programme was hugely successful, with a number of participants have already entered employment or are going into further training opportunities! Our volunteers have been busy across our sites this summer, providing our trees with plenty of love and care to ensure they flourish long into the future! 💚🌳 It's really encouraging to see how well our young woodlands are doing, and a huge reason for that is the dedication of our volunteers who keep coming back after planting season to help provide that all important aftercare.
