We are fascinated by a new report, published and sent to us by Prisoners' Education Trust, which shines a light on the powerful role education plays for young women in prison and on release. The author, research and policy consultant Katy Swaine Williams, includes first-hand feedback from eight young women who have spent time in prison, about their relationship with education and work: "I think I’ve got a really resilient spirit. I’m always doing something. I’m a goal setter. Growing up being physically abused, sometimes I felt I had to do things to know I am a worthy. Happy #FeedbackFriday from Give a Book! Some of our #FamilyDay participants were particularly excited by the Enid Blyton classics. Prisons organise Family Days to help prisoners bond with their family members. Our leading project, Prison Reading Groups supports these days with a bag and a book that families can enjoy on the day and children can take home as a tangible reminder of good time spent together. We send new books carefully chosen with the help of children’s bookshops, publishers and specialist volunteers to get a selection of engaging, accessible and varied books. Fantastic article about author Mick Herron's third visit to HMP Bullingdon, a prison we have worked with for two decades, as our guest. The piece discusses educational inequality, neurodiversity and the true value of reading to encourage empathy: “At its most basic level, reading can be escapism[...] But if you’re reading, you’re also putting yourself in somebody else’s head and the ability to walk in someone else’s shoes makes for greater understanding, greater co-operation, less conflict. We were delighted to receive a donation of Czech books from Rights People, which will be sent out to prison libraries! 🇨🇿 Foreign language book donations are greatly appreciated, as foreign nationals represent 12% of the total prison population in the UK, 1.3% being English as a second language (ESL) speakers. ❤️ #ReadingforPleasure #ESL

The pupils at Longwood Primary School showing off their #PagetoPicture creations! This project gives children the task of designing a front cover for a book without having seen the original design, combining #readingforpleasure with a creative activity. This round was based on Sci-Fi, adventure book, ‘Flood World’, by Tom Huddleston. We’re chuffed with the results! Nosy Crow This makes up part of our Whole School Reading Project with Longwood Primary School.
