📚 It’s such a thrill to open a new book, and we were doubly excited to receive freshly printed copies of the new GSA ltd. edition anthology ‘Triumph like a Girl’ last month. ✨ Marking our 150th anniversary, it gathers together the voices of women, girls, and allies of girls’ schools and education through a wonderful range of letters from headteachers, pupils, and GSA alumnae. A selection of students' longlisted haiku and haibun poems also feature from this year’s Go Bold Writing Award. It’s a treasure trove of original and inspiring thoughts from our community and we’re proud to share it more widely with the world. Huge thanks to award-winning writer Karen McCarthy Woolf for curating and editing it and to all those who put their pen to paper and fingers to keyboards to share their personal thoughts on girls' schools and girls' education. Summer holidays are a perfect time for longer reads, and we’re pleased to share some extracts of the book’s contents with you over the summertime. 👀 Keep your eyes peeled.

🎉 GSA’s celebrating all the women to enter Parliament, including the first ever female Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves and a record 11 women appointed to key cabinet positions! As the end of summer term fast approaches, GSA wants to give thanks to this year’s brilliant President Marina Gardiner Legge, Head at Oxford High School GDST for all she has done for the Association and its members over the year with her customary dash and daring. Marina shares some of her own personal thoughts with our whole community on her Presidential year and what it has meant to her: 'I can’t believe that my year as GSA president is nearly over. It’s been such a terrific year. Being able to really see, hear and feel not just what the wonderful team at GSA does, but also to see, hear and feel what our organisation means to every one of you – and how you contribute to it has been a privilege. I have travelled from Scotland to Baltimore representing you and the power, positivity, and joy that we share as leaders of girls’ schools. And so much of what we do is beautifully orchestrated by the team at GSA to whom I owe huge thanks. Their organisation, care, commitment, and dedication to the cause is terrific and to see the way the GSA inspires, supports and gives extraordinary opportunities to staff, Heads and pupils is wonderful to see. And, there is still so much to do: the daily news continues to remind us that our cause is still crucially important, urgent, and vital to the future stability and wealth – in all its senses – of our world. But this is not a note of despair; on the contrary I have seen so much good in our schools, in our world and overall in every one of you – our members. The joy of collaboration, of sharing our troubles and of the whole hearted commitment that I have seen this year to our moral mission has been inspiring. What every single one of us does is vitally important work and long may it, and GSA continue with verve, spirit and passion.' We appreciate all the hard work, enthusiasm and commitment you’ve brought to the role. 💪 Thank you Marina. 🍷🏆 GSA's Woman of the Week 🏆🍷 Join us in raising a glass to round off the school year and the achievement of Emily Brighton MW, LADY ELEANOR HOLLES SCHOOL alumna and the youngest female Master of Wine in the world! Her passion for viniculture began (as for many of us!) at Bristol University, but she turned it into a career culminating in passing the challenging exams. Emily says ‘Wine is the most endlessly fascinating subject, touching on art, history, geography and science. I don't think there's anything else like it, and the more you know, the more there is to discover. Blind tasting boils down to sensory logical reasoning under intense time pressure, which is joyous when you're getting things right, or conversely infuriating, but highly compelling either way!’ GSA proudly supports and champions women in all fields, and we applaud Emily's remarkable accomplishments in the wine industry! Thank you UK Festival of Education for giving me the first speaking slot of the day so I could relax and enjoy the conference and hear from inspiring speakers such as @DavidOlusoga “We have a long history in this country of telling half truths and missing chapters”. How can we teach about the Industrial Revolution without mentioning slave industry (and main raw material cotton). As well some depressing stats from Amnesty International UK: Gen z men more likely to think feminism is harmful, 70% of teachers have seen rise in sexist language in the classroom over the last 12 months and 79% teachers stated that lack of respect for women teachers is negatively impacting boys learning in the classroom. I think I might’ve presented to my youngest audience member ever, just weeks old (she slept throughout). Loved hanging out in the VIP speaker area and bumping into some familiar faces Geoff Barton, Priya Lakhani OBE OBE, Julie McCulloch Barnaby Lenon, Ed Kirwan and Pepe DiIasio. GSA’s CEO, Donna Stevens, is looking forward to attending the UK Festival of Education tomorrow and meeting with other educational leaders and professionals. As we celebrate our 150th anniversary, she’ll reflect on gender equality over the years in a speech. This will present new research examining schoolgirls’ perceptions of equality in areas such as business, politics, sport, and the home, with a closer look at what this means for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds and for girls with SEND.
