With Harland & Wolff currently constructing an underframe for our Ulster Railway carriage, for this #FlashbackFriday we’re highlighting another collaboration between H&W and a County Down railway which happened over 90 years ago. This image shows a pioneer of diesel traction, BCDR D1, which was the first of eight locomotives built by H&W during the 1930s. This diesel-electric loco entered service in 1933, and its first duty was working a train of journalists between Belfast and Newcastle via Downpatrick – making it the first mainline passenger diesel in Britain or Ireland. Although it could reach speeds of up to 50mph, D1 spent much of its working life on the Ballynahinch branch; it also briefly ran shuttles between Newcastle and Castlewellan. After much of the County Down railway network closed in 1950, this historic engine was returned to H&W and was used as a yard shunter until it was scrapped in 1969. In stark contrast to today’s diesel locos, D1 was designed to resemble a steam engine – the exhaust at the front mimicked a chimney, the ‘side tanks’ contained a vacuum exhauster and an air reservoir instead of water, and the battery box at the rear looked a lot like a coal bunker. Although D1 is unfortunately long gone, we’re very excited that such an iconic institution is so keen to work with us and to help revive our shared railway heritage.

🚂 Harland & Wolff's railway restoration 🚂     We are happy to be working with the Downpatrick and County Down Railway in an exciting restoration project. Our skilled apprentices are fabricating a brand-new underframe for a one-of-a-kind railway carriage—originally a luxurious first-class saloon that ferried wealthy travelers between Belfast and Armagh in the 1860s.     This historic carriage, once forgotten in a field and repurposed as a chicken shed, is now being carefully restored to its former glory. We're faithfully replicating the authentic 1860s underframe design, complete with unique Victorian features, while ensuring it meets modern safety standards.  Why this project is special: ✨   A First Since WWII: This is believed to be the first railway vehicle built by Harland & Wolff since World War II.   Skilled Apprentices: Our apprentices are playing a key role in this project, using their skills to connect with our storied heritage while gaining invaluable hands-on experience.  Robert Gardiner, Chairman of the Downpatrick and County Down Railway commented on the project, saying, "we are thrilled to partner with Harland & Wolff on this historic project ... Their enthusiasm for the project to recreate this Victorian gem has completely knocked us over.” At Harland & Wolff, we’re proud to contribute our craftsmanship to preserving such an important piece of history.     We look forward to sharing more progress as we continue shaping the future while honouring the past.     #HarlandAndWolff #Restoration #Heritage #Apprenticeships

🚢 Progress at Our Belfast Site 🚢 We are very pleased to share the completion of the 14th Cory barge, named Heron, at our Belfast site 🛠️   Our contract with Cory, one of the UK’s leading waste management and recycling businesses, involves delivering a total of 33 barges. This ongoing project highlights our commitment to supporting UK industries and contributing to environmental sustainability.   Heron, named after the graceful bird, was successfully loaded out and launched in the Belfast sunshine. This barge will play a crucial role in Cory's operations, transporting non-recyclable waste via river and removing around 100,000 truck journeys from London's roads each year.   Director of Shipbuilding Allan Smith notes: "Another successful load out and launched in the Belfast sunshine. Job well done as we continue to deliver."   A big thank you to our dedicated team at Belfast for their hard work. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to deliver on this significant project.   #HarlandAndWolff #CoryBarges #Sustainability

🚢 Harland & Wolff's legacy and future ✨      Last week, we had the opportunity to welcome Dr. Tom McCluskie MBE to our Belfast site. Dr. McCluskie dedicated 38 years to Harland & Wolff, starting as a mail boy and rising to head of the draughting department, eventually retiring as admin and archive manager. He even served as a technical consultant to James Cameron on Titanic.      Returning to the yard he grew up in was an emotional afternoon for him and educational one for us. Dr. McCluskie recounted amusing stories, such as the mystery of the Steinway piano, which was installed into a ship via a large hole cut in the side, only to go missing without a trace the next day, never to be found. He also shared lived experience stories about fluctuating fortunes of the UK maritime industry over years and how Harland & Wolff has always weathered the storm. It was fascinating to receive an education from the man who knows our Belfast site better than anyone.     One thing stood out during our conversation: Harland & Wolff's enduring resilience. From its heyday to today, overcoming challenges has defined the company. Our black and yellow cranes, Samson and Goliath, stand tall as proud symbols of a relentless spirit and determination embedded within both H&W and the people of Belfast, who together built the most famous shipyard in the world. Reflecting upon his career at H&W, Dr. McCluskie noted:    "H&W runs through the blood of the citizens of Belfast and the greater community it serves. The two giant cranes on the skyline mean you are home ... From the very beginning the company had a 'can do' philosophy which is as true today as it always was. Impossible is a word not understood or ever used in Harland and Wolff."      Thank you, Dr. Tom McCluskie, for reminding us of who we are and inspiring us as to where we are going.      #HarlandAndWolff #Belfast #Heritage

📅⚓🥳Delivery Day!! The new cable barge, specifically designed to support operations at HM Naval Base Portsmouth, has arrived at the base. This project is a result of the collaborative efforts of the KBS Maritime Project and Operational teams, with support from Attis, and the build by Harland & Wolff. The design, inspired by the long-serving existing cable barge, incorporates significant enhancements to boost the Naval Base’s operations. Don’t be fooled by its seemingly simple design. The 2️⃣ 6️⃣-metre cable barge is an essential asset for the Royal Navy. Its operation engages specialist teams who rightfully anticipate its high performance and the safety it ensures. A significant amount of effort has been dedicated to devising the optimal solution. In the coming month, the barge will be put through a series of trials and commissioning tests. Upon successful completion, it will commence its duties across the Base later this summer. A big shout-out to the amazing team at Harland & Wolff Appledore. Keep an eye out for more updates! 📷 KBS Maritime Project and Design Team, Harland & Wolff Project Team, Attis - Principal Designers & Safety Experts, and the Naval Base Operational Teams from both KBS Maritime and BAE Systems.
