Inspiring action that’s good for the environment and for everyone 🌱

Über uns

Hubbub is an award-winning creative charity that inspires action that’s good for the environment and for everyone. Since 2014 we’ve been forming unique collaborations across business and communities, and using behavioural insights, everyday language, and good design to make environmental choices desirable and more possible. Our campaigns meet people where they’re at, focussing on topics people care about that also have a big impact, like the food we eat, clothes we wear, green spaces and our communities. We show the collective power of people coming together to do what they can and use this as evidence to encourage government and business to make it easier for everyone to make greener choices too. So far, we’ve worked with over 2,630 organisations, supported 6,400 people to transform their way of living for the long-term, delivered over 180 campaigns and inspired more than 700,000 behaviour changes in 2023 alone. What this looks like in practice: - Habits for a lifetime: Collaborating with IKEA to create one of the world’s largest customer-facing behaviour change campaigns, Live LAGOM, supporting thousands of households to transform their daily habits, like cutting energy, food waste, buying less and repairing more. Launched in 2016, Live LAGOM continues to be central to IKEA’s strategy for supporting customers. - Championing communities: A thriving network of over 650 Community Fridges that have redistributed 18 million meals worth of surplus food within their communities. Supported by Co-op and Starbucks. - Making waves: A viral cigarette voting ashtray proven to cut litter by 46% and is currently featured across 43 countries worldwide. - Innovating always: £6.8 million invested in trialling new innovations and supporting community groups to replicate and scale proven initiatives. Could secondhand move to first place? According to Vinted, the answer is yes🥇 Over 16 million of us in the UK are now using the resale app @Vinted, which is almost a quarter of the population! It’s a powerful indication of a cultural shift towards the secondhand market. And recent Hubbub polling backs it up too – over 40% of people had sold an item of old clothing instead of throwing it away.  With the equivalent of a rubbish truck worth of clothes being burned or sent to landfill every second (Ellen MacArthur Foundation, 2022), every step towards keeping more clothes in circulation and out of landfill is great news.  And there’s loads more potential to harness this acceptance of pre-loved. Where Vinted started as a marketplace for clothes, you can now buy and sell homeware, books, games, even pet care!  So, how do we continue making secondhand marketplaces even more attractive, accessible and sustainable? @Depop recently dropped their seller fees, making it more profitable to sell. Maybe they could be integrated into the same places people are already buying new? What do you think?  #secondhandmarket #secondhandeconomy #sustainablefashion

⚡ Electrifying News! ⚡ Our #RehomeYourElectricals projects collected a combined spark-tacular 1,271.9kg of electricals (over 1 tonne!)! With an estimated 880 million gadgets gathering dust in UK homes – 31 items per household - it's clear there's a massive opportunity to rehome electricals. Thanks to the volunteers at Wolverton Community Fridge and Albrighton Community Fridge, 727 items were collected, safety checked, and rehomed. Electricals found new homes with community fridge users and with local charity partners including The Bus Shelter MK, YMCA MILTON KEYNES, UnityMK and Salvation Army: Lighthouse Project. Swipe through the slides to discover how #RehomeYourElectricals has helped individuals in these two communities. #RehomeYourElectricals is just one of the 40 plus projects funded by Material Focus’ Electricals Recycling Fund. The fund aims to significantly reduce #ewaste (electronic waste) and its environmental impact by making it easier for people to reuse and recycle their electricals. Can you tackle fast fashion without talking about shopping? 🤔 Here are five things we’ve learnt about communicating responsible fashion.  The pressure to consume fashion is extremely high, with the chatter of new trends and constant advertising – and trying to cut through that conversation is hard.  But our recent polling shows there has been a shift in people’s attitudes! So we just need to harness it and help make behaviour shifts as easy, desirable, and consistent as possible.  👚 74% of us have worn clothes we already own for longer to avoid buying new  👔 58% of us agree that we should all be trying to buy fewer clothes We’re constantly restyling our approach, but here are five ideas based on what we’ve learnt ‘fits’ well. 🌻🌱 Introducing the Community Fridge Network’s younger, greener sibling: The Community Nature Network 🌻🌱 What is it?  It’s a bit like our Community Fridge Network, but for community nature projects. A brand-new nationwide collective, coordinated by Hubbub, which offers learning resources and funding opportunities, and enables groups to share knowledge and support with each other. The Community Nature Network aims to:  ➡️Increase access and connection to nature with new or improved green spaces  ➡️Channel funding into community-led green spaces  ➡️Show that getting outdoors is for everyone – not just those who already seek it out  ➡️Champion nature as a powerful hook to inspire planet-friendly habits Why is it important?  We know how important nature is for our physical and mental wellbeing and that spending time in it can be a powerful motivator to inspire climate action. Yet a third of us in the UK spend less than an hour a week in green space! We’re on a mission to bring nature closer to people, and people closer to nature by supporting community-led green spaces to grow further (with both plants and people!).     🪴 Want to dig in? Check out the Network at https://lnkd.in/gdRgTT6x 🌳Interested in supporting community-based nature projects? Get in touch. We've built the network thanks to the support of Bentley Environmental Foundation and Wates Family Enterprise Trust, and now we're actively seeking partners to support its growth.

Can nature inspire climate action? 🌿 Here are five things we’ve learnt about the relationship between access to nature and the desire to look after it.  We explored this in a research partnership with Wates Family Enterprise Trust and Chrysalis that included:  🌿 182 participants   🌿 19 community nature projects  🌿 activities ranging from seed sowing to veg pickling to tree grafting What were the results? Swipe through to see.  Despite the endless benefits that come from spending time in nature, a third of us in the UK spend less than an hour a week in green space. We’re on a mission to bring nature closer to people, and people closer to nature – with an exciting announcement coming soon!  #AccessToNature #GreenSpace #ClimateResearch #SustainabilityResearch

Crying over spilt milk? No, we’re celebrating over a virtual pint of milk! We’ve partnered with Modern Milkman, who – as well as offering sustainably packaged, plastic-free groceries – are supporting our Community Fridge Network to share food amongst communities and save food waste. For the month of August, every time you successfully refer a friend, The Modern Milkman will donate £5 to Hubbub. And for the rest of this year, you can ‘buy’ a virtual pint of milk with your regular order, and 95% of the cost will be donated to the Community Fridge Network. Wondering what a Community Fridge is? They’re spaces that bring people together to share food, save it from going to waste, connect and learn new skills. In partnership with the Co-op the Community Fridge Network has grown to over 650 fridges across the UK and last year they shared around 18 million meals' worth of food to over 600,000 visitors! We think that’s worth raising a glass for! 🥛 Find out more or pick up a virtual pint here: https://lnkd.in/dz23p8Ub

Six reasons Paris might be the ‘most sustainable Olympics yet’ 🤾🏽♂️🌍   Their aim was to cut carbon emissions by half compared to the London and Rio Olympics. Swipe to see how they’re doing it ➡️   It’s clear Paris has made enormous progress on sustainability - but is it enough?   With an estimated 80% of sporting events emissions coming from attendees flying in, there’s a huge environmental impact before the games even begin. We’ve not spotted any messaging around overland travel, for example, despite there being obvious potential for those travelling from within Europe to skip the flights. Take the BBC sports team, who cycled their way from Manchester to Paris to highlight sustainable travel, meeting different British athletes along their way!     We're curious about how sport can be a kick-starter for climate action – from getting football fans making tactical subs to more plant-based meals with #ManchesterIsGreen, to nudging fans to vote on sport related questions using their cigarette butts with the ‘Ballot Bin’. From harnessing the sense of community, the competitive spirit and the outdoor environment through to being influenced by our favourite athletes, we know sports can be a perfect starting point for creating change. Have any ideas on this? We'd love to hear them.    #Olympics #Sustainability

Let’s play word association! If we say ‘compostable’, you’d think of...?    Soil, worms... your food waste bin? Ideally there’d be a universal symbol for recognising compostable packaging – like the green recycling arrow - but there’s no standardised disposal labelling yet.     As part of a two-year Compostable Coalition UK project with The University of Sheffield, we developed and tested two labels, aligned with OPRL Limited guidance, to help people identify and dispose of compostables.    Our favourite label design was the wiggly worm, but feedback from user testing was mixed, with people calling it a ‘moustache’ and even a ‘disgusting snake-looking worm’. 😢    We landed on two designs that:  - Included a unique symbol and clear disposal instruction. We tested a plant-pot-meets-cup design in three office canteens, before simplifying it to a big bold C in a second trial with 120 households  - Were colour-coded to match the bin or bin signage, to make the behaviour of identifying and disposing of the packaging more automatic. See pink? Think compostable.   - Included 'Do Not Recycle' to align with proposed UK legislation for compostable packaging.    The labels were tested along with other interventions, which saw 2.4 times more compostable packaging in the right bin in the offices trial and 1.8 times more in the households trial.      Agree there should be a standardised disposal label for compostable packaging? Let us know your thoughts in the comments. Want to dig further into the project? Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/erk9Nq7e   #CompostablePackaging #WasteReduction

When community called, this phone answered. (And, technically, so did 19,999 others... but let’s focus on this one for now).  In today’s world, access to the internet means access to medical services, educational resources, finances, socialising, entertainment, and pretty much everything you need to get by day to day. You’re probably reading this on a phone right now, huh?  Our Community Calling campaign has now rehomed an incredible 20,000 secondhand smartphones and counting, to get people who need them digitally connected, including: ☎️ Refugees and asylum seekers  ☎️ Victims of domestic violence   ☎️ People facing homelessness   ☎️ Elderly citizens And every phone is life changing for the person who receives it! From calling loved ones, to applying for jobs, booking a doctors appointment to being able to listen to music , and so many other benefits each day.  Not to mention all the very valuable metals and resources that are saved from landfill by reusing all this tech! So in hindsight, it’s kind of unfair to award #EmployeeOfTheMonth to this rehomed phone over any other - but we don’t have 20,000 months in a year... so, you get the idea. 😇 If your business has old phones that could help do more of this, get in touch at [email protected].
