The recent changes to planning rules that once again make onshore wind projects in England a possibility creates a host of new renewable energy opportunities. However, there are also challenges that will need to be overcome - not least how these new sources are connected to the National Grid ⚡. What are the key concerns for data centre operators when it comes to fire? Although it can set them back millions, it's not just the physical impact of a potential fire that keeps them up at night. The top priority is to avoid cutting the power to the equipment. Why? Customers are dependent on digitally stored information, and are paying to store it there, so no data centre can afford downtime – it could be a breach of contract. This means data centres require a bespoke and expert fire safety solution: there isn’t a single fire protection solution for an entire data centre. Soon, the Building Safety Regulator will be asking you to apply for a Building Assessment Certificate (BAC). 🏢 If you are responsible for a high-rise residential building, you will have already registered it with the BSR. It's worth checking what you provided when completing this step, and taking further action to identify any incomplete fire and structural information. 📝 The BSR recommends that your building’s safety case report and other documents should now be in place. Don't forget - it's your job to keep the building information held by them up to date. ⏰ The BSR will be in touch with you when it's time to apply, and you'll then have 28 days to provide the required information. ✔️ We can help clients undertake an information gap analysis, prepare their safety case report and other prescribed documents, assisting with a smooth submission to the BSR. Huge congratulations go to Plymouth's Melville Phase 1, winner of Best Project at the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) South West Awards for Planning Excellence! 🎉🎉 Built in the 19th century as a naval victualling yard, many of the listed buildings at Royal William Yard, including Melville, eventually fell into disrepair. However, they have now been transformed into a vibrant mixed-use development, including apartments, a boutique cinema, restaurants, offices, co-working space and a gym. Melville is at the heart of the Yard’s transformation. Our structural team in Bristol played a key role in the sensitive conversion of this Grade 1 Listed building, giving its cast iron columns, timber beams and thick stone walls a new lease of life. Doing so with minimal intrusion allowed us to retain the building’s character, whilst ensuring it could now be used in a number of ways - preserving the city's built heritage for generations to come.
