Earlier this week, we hosted an event in partnership with PwC on ‘The Race to Net-Zero: Navigating Africa’s Climate Paradox’, where we were joined by Lullu Krugel, Chief Economist, Southern Africa and Sustainability Practice Lead at PwC, Liesl Esau, HSE & EC Lead – Southern Africa at bp, Melissa Sikwila (nee Kububa), Chief Vice President: Project Development & Finance at Genesis Energy, Nic van Schalkwyk, Managing Director at Restore Africa Funds and Shirley Webber, Head of Natural Resources and Energy at Absa Group to explore how to unlock Africa's potential in the race to net-zero. Some of the key takeaways from the session were: - Lullu emphasised that transforming how we operate is crucial. Tackling the climate paradox requires collective action from all stakeholders to achieve development goals. - Shirley noted the interdependence between nations, highlighting @ABSA’s strategy to implement and replicate climate change solutions across Africa. - Liesl shared bp's commitment to "lighting up Africa" by focusing on empowering communities, one at a time. BP's global ambitions are significant, but Liesl pointed out the importance of localising solutions for South Africa, especially around social priorities and community funding. - Melissa stressed the need for integrated energy solutions, advocating for hybrid approaches like wind, solar, and gas, while ensuring social issues are addressed. - Nic highlighted agriculture's critical role in combating climate change, emphasising how regenerative farming practices, like those of Restore Africa Funds, are essential for sustainability and reducing carbon footprints. We would like to thank our partner for the event, PwC, our esteemed speakers and our guests who joined us for this insightful discussion. #NetZero #Sustainability #ClimateAction #EnergySolutions #Agriculture #Africa

As the world grapples to limit global warming we have seen a monumental shift to pursue net-zero. Africa contributes significantly less carbon emissions compared to other regions, yet disproportionately suffers from climate impacts – from floods to droughts to heatwaves. The continent’s journey to net-zero is conflicted with unique challenges and opportunities. Transitioning from traditional energy mix to green alternatives is an immense and costly task, especially for oil-rich nations reliant on oil revenues. However, Africa’s race to net zero presents numerous opportunities. Join us in Cape Town on 11 September as our experts discuss how investing in renewable energy projects, supporting sustainable agricultural practices, and backing green technologies, stakeholders can drive both economic growth and environmental stewardship. Celebrating Women’s month in South Africa 🚙 🌸 Last week in partnership with AfriPower Utility Partners, we were pleased to host an experience with Land Rover to commemorate the women in our network. The immersive experience allowed us to take our guests away from the boardroom and provided an excellent opportunity to network with likeminded, powerful women leading the charge in business in South Africa. The focus of the discussion was around the importance of harnessing the collective power of women to drive social change. The speakers, Viwe Tini CA(SA), CEO Vunani Securities, Nyasha M. CEO of Finenergi Advisory Services, Candice Dott, Head of Market Engagement at Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD) with 60+ years’ experience collectively working in finance, energy, infra and consulting, highlighted the need to promote inclusivity by eliminating gender bias in the world of work, and the importance of breaking down barriers. An interesting statistic was raised: if you look at corporations across the globe, majority of the chief sustainability officers are women. They are in the forefront of shaping policy as they are in the driving seat of change. AfriPower Utility Partners is passionate about African solutions, for Africans, by Africans and this message resonates with the insights shared by the speakers who have relentlessly poured back into the continent.
