CSO Harsh Amin, PhD will be speaking at the Forbes Middle East Sustainability Leaders Summit in Abu Dhabi, UAE this October 17-18. Centered around the theme "Shaping a Sustainable Tomorrow," the event aims to accelerate sustainable development and climate resilience while driving economic growth in the region. In an area of the world that must import a vast majority of its protein, we are thrilled to discuss the potential of cultivated meat as a food security and sustainability solution.

"Cultivated meat has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of our food system, cater to growing global meat demand, and feed more people with fewer resources."
🥩 How does cultivated meat compare with conventional meat on environmental metrics? Cultivating meat from cells has clear environmental benefits, as the production can cut the climate impact by up to 92%, reduce air pollution by up to 94%, and use up to 90% less land compared with farming animals. Cultivated meat has the potential to reduce the environmental impact of our food system, cater to growing global meat demand, and feed more people with fewer resources. For this to happen, we need public sector investment in open-access research to overcome key bottlenecks and support the growth of the entire sector. European governments need to step up with their support to ensure that Europe does not fall behind on this game-changing food. Welcome back to Meat the Makers Featuring: Beatrice Sina, Senior Research Associate on Bioprocessing AKA Style Guru and Amante Della Pasta 🍝 “The idea of breaking boundaries is what excites me. Achieving something that so many think is impossible, and doing it because it’s the right thing to do.” Favourite dish: Aubergine Parmigiana Favourite biscuit: Gocciole (of course, Italian). Favourite animal: Capibara Growing up, Beatrice fell in love with creating things. She became an engineer because she and her two older brothers were constantly building treehouses outdoors. That curiosity and determination carried her into a career filled with cutting-edge science. Beatrice has collaborated to publish two scientific papers in regenerative medicine at Politecnico di Milano, thinking she would go into advanced medical research to work on invitro organs. Lucky for us, she stumbled upon #CultivatedMeat. For her, our industry sparked interest because it was a completely new perspective on an industry that reached every corner of the world and had great implications for us all. Overturning something as universal as meat, flipping it on its head, and breaking it down to the cell to rebuild it is a challenge she tackles in full force. The contrast of typically strong and powerful engineering and the delicate nature of cells still fascinates her and we so enjoy having her on the team. Bringing us treats back from Italy isn’t so bad either. If she wasn't in STEM, Beatrice would be all over upcycling and renovating antique furniture. It all comes back to those tree houses! #WomeninSTEM #Bioprocessing #AlternativeProtein #WomeninScience

Wise words from our founder Russ Tucker to inspire action to get the UK moving towards global leadership in biotech. Let’s go for gold as he said and give startups the resources to thrive! 🏆🥇🇬🇧
Is the UK doing enough in the global #industrial #biotech race? 🤔 I don't think so. 👏 Although there has been some great action to date... - Launch of the National Vision for Engineering Biology - Creation of an Engineering Biology Steering Group - £115M in awards for academic-focused research ...we aren't doing anywhere near enough on #infrastructure And others, in particular the USA, are forging ahead, putting UK companies at a strong disadvantage. To do better, we need novel types of funding for: - Pilot-scale facilities - Scale-up testing - Scale-up facilities 🏅 Every four years, Team GB punch above their weight in the Olympics and bring home a haul of medals. We can do the same in #engbio. The startups and scaleups can be our Olympians - give them the facilities and funding, and watch them bring home the gold! Great news for #alternativeprotein in the UK and beyond today as the National Alternative Protein Innovation Center was announced. Our own Riley Jackson contributed to the commentary piece: “The new NAPIC is admirable and important, and it’s great to see further support for alt proteins from UKRI. The UK has some of the brightest minds within biotech and alt proteins, and we hope this latest move is the first of many when it comes to investment and support for startups developing new alt-proteins such as cultivated meat.”
