On Monday, a number of news outlets, including The Irish Times, reported that the Federal Reserve are expected to keep interest rates steady but to tee up a cut in September. They reported that US inflation has taken a “favourable turn”, lowering borrowing costs and softening the labour market. The meeting on Wednesday will serve as an “important platform to further tee up a monetary policy pivot as early as September”. Economists expect the FOMC to acknowledge “it is more confident about its handle on inflation” and “its readiness to lower rates”. I still remember being shocked during my IB analyst training session when we were told we shouldn’t need to use a mouse during work! So if you're working on improving your technical skills or completing internships, here is a great resource you can use to become more efficient with excel. Not all will be applicable, but you'll quickly find the ones that are - it's about practice as always and making the effort to actually use them for the actions you perform most. This skill can also sometimes prove useful when it comes to modelling exercises/technical interviews! Finally, there are also specific shortcuts used when working with softwares like FactSet or Bloomberg which I would recommend you check out as well!

A number of news outlets reported yesterday that Wall Street have recorded their best quarter in two years. As described in the attached article published by Eulerpool Research Systems, major investment banks reported fee income of $8.2 billion, a 40% increase compared to the previous year. Sharon Yeshaya, CFO of Morgan Stanley, referred to this as the “early stages of an investment banking upswing”. Mergers and Acquisitions - themiddlemarket.com released an article recently exploring the talent shortage in critical roles in the financial services industry. 2021 and 2022 saw a big intake of talent. To remain competitive, businesses were offering an increase in pay. When the M&A market dropped last year, this resulted in a number of redundancies across banks all the way from the bulge brackets to smaller boutiques. As hiring slowly rises, employers are finding they are “struggling to hire the people that they want with the talent they would like to see”, especially at the associate level. The challenge at the moment is that there are “fewer candidates who’ve worked on full M&A deal”. The attached article explores the exploration of AI as a solution to this problem. Overall, it seems the financial services industry are cautious of replacing human talent with AI but are keen to explore how it may be able to assist.
