Operating London’s landmark Elizabeth line

About us

At MTREL, we believe in the power of London’s railway network to connect families, friends, colleagues and communities. We were awarded the Elizabeth line concession by Transport for London (TfL) in July 2014, initially operating services under the interim TfL Rail branding, connecting Paddington to Reading and Heathrow in the west, and Liverpool Street with Shenfield in the east. In May 2022, the new Central Section was opened by Her Majesty the Queen, officially launching the new Elizabeth line and offering passengers a new way to travel initially between Paddington and Abbey Wood via Liverpool Street. The Elizabeth line is the most significant addition to London’s transport network in a generation, providing new journey options, cutting travel time and supporting regeneration across the capital. We are incredibly proud to be part of this transformative new railway, providing world-class customer service and performance.

Meet Shuhada Ali (“Inaya”), a vibrant Customer Experience Assistant at Canary Wharf, celebrated for her dedication as a mentor at MTR Elizabeth line.   Inaya's journey with MTREL started over two years ago, and since then, she has significantly shaped the training and development of new starters. Recognising the overwhelming nature of the initial stages of railway employment, Inaya became a mentor to ease the process for others.   Her daily responsibilities include managing platform duties and security, but it's her mentoring role that truly stands out. Inaya recalls how her own experiences as a new employee inspired her to support others.   The training for becoming a mentor was a natural step for Inaya, propelled by her innate desire to help and guide. She underwent specialised training which equipped her with essential skills and a deeper understanding of her role.    Through the mentoring of numerous new starters, she has adapted her approach to fit each individual's strengths and weaknesses and shapes her strategy around making training sessions fun and interactive to ensure the lessons stick.   Inaya's mentoring not only enhances the confidence and performance of her mentees but also continuously enriches her own skills and personal development. She credits her role with teaching her the importance of balancing professionalism with personality, making her a beloved mentor at MTREL.   Why does she do it? “Knowing I’ve made a difference and seeing the trainees’ appreciation makes all the effort worthwhile”, she says.   Join us in applauding Shuhada Ali for her outstanding contribution to nurturing talent and fostering a supportive environment at MTR Elizabeth line.   #MTREL #EmployeeSpotlight #Mentorship #CustomerService #ProfessionalDevelopment

At MTR Elizabeth line, we understand the dedication and teamwork required to operate a high-quality railway service.   In partnership with the London Transport Museum, we recorded an oral history project to capture the experiences of our colleagues who worked on the Crossrail project and now operate the Elizabeth line.   From planning timetables to driving the first passenger train, discover the stories of those at the heart of our operations.   Here is what they had to say about operating London’s newest railway line!   Mike Bagshaw, our Managing Director shared his experience developing a reliable timetable, balancing stakeholder needs, and ensuring smooth operations across the line, describing it as "one of the best, probably industry-leading timetable processes that there’s been in the industry."   Louis Labonté (ACIRO), Duty Head of Control, discussed how “juggling the project side while running an everyday train service was very difficult”, but they were able to overcome the challenges of managing a mixed fleet, maintaining old units while integrating new ones, and ensuring minimal disruption to passengers.   Monika Michalska, Train Driver, recounted the excitement and pressure of driving the first passenger service, and the meticulous preparation that went into making it a success. ”There were cheers. It was amazing – even I could tell, it felt special for people in London.”   These stories reflect the hard work and commitment of our team, and the array of roles and responsibilities that contribute to the seamless operation of the Elizabeth line.   Follow the link to hear more about the team’s unique experiences operating the Elizabeth line.   👉 https://lnkd.in/dVTRNHtF   #MTREL #ElizabethLine #LondonTransportMuseum #MTRELHistory #RailwayService

Giving our colleagues a platform to grow and evolve is something we deem very important at MTR Elizabeth line.   Last week, we were proud to launch our much-anticipated Emerging Talent Programme! A unique initiative designed to up-skill and build confidence, creating opportunities to develop our future leaders.   Over the next three months, participants will engage in a series of tailored training sessions, aimed at advancing their careers at MTREL. These sessions will focus on various aspects of professional development, from skill-building workshops to leadership training.   The event brought together our 'Rising Stars' (those in front-line roles) and 'Emerging Leaders' (those already in entry-level management roles) for a day filled with energy, enthusiasm, and valuable insights.   A huge highlight was having our directors, Paul Parsons, Nick Westcott, Mike Bagshaw, and Lisa Wheatcroft, share their personal stories and words of inspiration with the group.   Participants were equally excited, with one remarking, “I’m looking forward to the programme as a whole, to learn some new skills, putting some new tools into my cabinet that I can then use as a stepping stone to further my career.”   Stay tuned for more updates as the participants embark on this first-of-its-kind journey to further their careers!   #EmergingTalent #CareerDevelopment #MTREL #Leadership #MTREL

On Monday, MTR Elizabeth line community ambassadors organised a wreath-laying event by the Windrush Generation Plaque at Paddington station for the Ageless Teenagers community organisation (agelessteenagers.com), celebrating 76 years since the arrival of the HMT Empire Windrush at Tilbury Docks.   Based along the Elizabeth line between Ilford and Romford, we have been supporting Ageless Teenagers for the past 6 years, a community-based organisation focused on tackling loneliness and isolation. Many members of Ageless Teenagers can trace their roots to the HMT Empire Windrush, a proportion of whom settled around Paddington, leading to the world-famous Caribbean carnival in Notting Hill.   It's important to commemorate, celebrate, and educate people about the contributions of the Windrush generation and their descendants across the UK. We wish everyone a happy Windrush Day on Saturday, 22nd June, and are proud we can support and connect these communities across London and the surrounding area. #WindrushDay #MTR #ElizabethLine #WindrushGeneration

Yesterday, MTR Elizabeth line was delighted to welcome a delegation from Queensland Rail working on the Cross River Rail project in Australia. As part of their operational research visit to London, the team engaged in a comprehensive exploration of the Elizabeth line's preparations for entry into service, gaining insights at key facilities like Old Oak Common Depot, Paddington Station, and the Romford Control Centre.   Highlights of the visit included: •Delving into our driver training methods and operational protocols with a focus on CBTC/ECTS and PSD management. •Discussing our approaches to competence management, training and staff development to bolster both safety and customer service. •A cab ride through the central operating section, featuring a demonstration of auto-reverse at Paddington. •Exploring how we handle challenges in tunnel ventilation, incident response, and service recovery.
