Socio-economic diversity in Tech is a problem; as shown in the stats below from a recent Times article Raising socio-economic diversity in the world of work is not only fair, but also leverages the talents and abilities of those from lower-income backgrounds. This can have substantial economic benefits. Studies show that if the UK matched Western Europe's social mobility levels, its GDP could grow by a huge 2% and each person's GDP could increase by £590. ⭐️ This is equivalent to an additional £39 billion for the UK economy ⭐️ Future CodeHers , our school outreach program in tech focuses on partnering with girls state schools only, where the average free school meal eligibility rate is 20%. One of the schools we work with has a 42.5% eligibility rate of which we give priority access to tech work experience and career talks. The recent news of the Tech Talent Charter folding due to "companies quiet quitting DEI" is a setback. Now more than ever, initiatives like Future CodeHers are crucial and we need your support. If you're London-based, working in tech and passionate about inspiring the next generation, please reach out to Naushine Robinson Assoc CIPD to get involved. After several conversations with BPP's CPTO, Jo Wickremasinghe, 5 months of planning and going back and forth with Rick Lippiett and Murray Brown to organise, we had 6 Future CodeHers students join BPP for their summer Hackathon on #GenerativeAI last week. This was a first hackathon for us, and the anticipation of how it would turn out was real. I can gladly say that this is one of the best experiences we’ve had and biggest insights into Tech and Product. This is why: ⭐️Product & Technology (P&T) at BPP were split into 6 Teams; a combination of Product Managers, Designers, Engineers, QA, Data. One Future CodeHers student joined each team and they were given a problem statement. ⭐️ Day 1 involved problem framing; this was a super organised process using Miro where we participated in various lightening talks, journey mapping, and how might we’s, to analyse the problem statement with our team. We looked at the problem, how it impacts users and why, current processes in place, business impact and benefit, areas of prioritisation. Shout out to the facilitator's on the day! ⭐️ On Day 2 we hacked. Each team identified a solution and built it. Product teams designed the prototype focusing on the look, feel and layout whilst Software and Prompt Engineers built a demo in just 12 hours. ⭐️ Day 3 - Each team presented back their solutions and demos, and the winning team was announced in Judges Review. I was in Team F along with Maira Dawood, we were only two points behind the winning team 👏. Myself, Diya Menon, Victoria Aladesuru, Maira Dawood Elizabeth Ifede Sophia Libych Yimika Paul-Taiwo experienced the following: 🙌🏼 Saw Tech and Product roles 'live in action' 🙌🏼 The full Tech process from problem to solution whilst thinking about the business impact/benefits along the way. 🙌🏼 We had the opportunity to use Miro boards, Figma and Slack 🙌🏼 Delve into Gen AI and see how Prompt Engineering works 🙌🏼 and most important of all, witness cross-functional collaboration and communication. Seeing all the teams work together and bring their expertise and ideas to drive innovation was inspiring. From myself, Future CodeHers and Oliver Bernard, thank you to everyone at BPP for being so welcoming and going out of your way to make this a valuable experience for the students. It has helped provide clarity on areas of tech they enjoy and don't! A special thank you to Rick Lippiett, Murray Brown, Jo Wickremasinghe. And a personal thank you to Team F for the laughs, snacks, good times and great ideas- Maira Dawood Rachel Arthur, Murray Brown, Joe Harris, Janak Trivedi, Florence English, Robert O., Marie Boulanger, Dylan, Yinka and Heather and Victoria Aladesuru.

It's been tough finding Tech work experience for students...but I'd argue it's one of the most valuable experiences a 16-18 year old could have. (Especially if we want to see more girls getting into tech and improve the gender balance in the long run.) Having said that, last year I only had 6 girls out for WEX (with R3); this year it has increased to 17 girls 🙌🏼 . This may not seem a lot in the grand scheme but it's almost tripled so I'm happy with that. Diya Menon Amelia Rumjon Temiya tabassum, Sahana Begum Douad Syed Anzuman Islam Maysanne Mokhtari Saira Ali Shayma I. Deborah Kwofie Tsz Yan Lee Valerie Blankson Helena Sitch Mithraa Sudhakar Sophia Huang Mariam Jahan and Maisha Haque are all #aspiring comp science students who were welcomed into the offices of GlobalLogic, R3, Flock and AllSaints for a week. Here's what they got up to: 🤟🏽 Explored different careers in technology ⛓️ Delved into Blockchain; they created a use case in a real-world setting for blockchain; Sophia Huang and her team went for a pharmaceutical option where blockchain can be used to maintain the integrity of prescriptions as well as easy-use and quicker transactions. 🛒 Built an e-commerce website called ‘SportingLogic’, using Python, Flask, HTML, CSS. They gained familiarity with Jira, Bitbucket and working collaboratively using Agile methodologies.  🔄 Learnt about the Product Lifecycle 👩🏽💻 Designed and pair programmed a system gaining familiarity with tools they'd never used before like Snowflake and Github 👀 Attended Employability Workshops on interview techniques, LinkedIn and career paths. 🤝 Met some wonderful people in the tech/product and TA industry It's great to see that startups and large companies alike are opening their doors proving any size company can find the time to inspire the next generation of tech leaders if they want to; and I know how rewarding it will make your tech teams feel 👏 Thank you to all the companies for making this happen, shoutouts to Grace Sandford Lee White Tom Chapman Sam Baillie Jen F. and everyone at GlobalLogic. Sylwia Blonska Nadine Loepfe Noshin Begum and the R3 team. Adam Grant Lauren Trent Ben Brown and the Flock team. Krystyna K. Wood Cassandra Nicholson Sara Duxbury (MSc OccPsych, GMBPsS) Victoria Pursey and everyone at AllSaints. ✨ Remember that one week a year at your company can create a lifelong passion for tech in these girls ✨ So, please reach out if your company could support work experience 🙏 Future CodeHers Oliver Bernard
