Let's harvest rainwater! Joined by award-winning gardener Leon Davis and Bev Moon from the Haslington Parish Allotment Society. We recently gifted 8 new immediate bulk containers (IBC's) to the local allotment site. This will help to collect over 12,000 litres of rainwater, over double the capacity to what they're used to. In addition to rainwater being extra beneficial for the plants, our IBC's will help reduce reliance on mains water. A win-win for nature. We’re thrilled to announce the arrival of our first electric HGV with modified trailer, marking a significant milestone in our Green Fleet strategy! Delivered to our Bioresource Logistics team at the Manchester Bioresource Centre, this electric Volvo truck is the first of several that will help reduce our carbon footprint and lead the way in sustainable logistics. The electricity used to charge the vehicle is generated on-site from gas recovered through our eight anaerobic digestors and five combined heat and power engines, showcasing our commitment to innovation and sustainability. We’ve revealed ambitious plans to grow the Lake District’s rainforest at Haweswater. This winter a major tree planting scheme will begin to extend the temperate rainforest of Naddle Forest, a habitat now a rare sight across Britain. Glen Swainson has been appointed as the new site manager at Wild Haweswater, a partnership United Utilities and the RSPB, and will lead the charge to plant 16,500 native trees, enhancing habitats for species like Red Squirrels and Pied Flycatchers. The extended woodlands, which are great for capturing carbon, will also play a vital role in enhancing the drinking water for more than two million people in Cumbria and the North West by providing natural filtration to improve the water quality. #conservation #partnership #woodland #climatechange #carbon #waterquality

On Saturday our LGBT+ Together Colleague Network proudly supported Manchester Pride in ‘Buzzing to be Queer – A Hive of Progress’. Our float filled with colleagues, allies, family and friends joined the thousands of supporters marching for equality. This year’s theme reminds us that, just like worker bees collaborating in a hive, LGBTQ+ communities and their allies can achieve great things when united together. At United Utilities we want where you work to be a place where you feel you can bring your whole self and we’ve been embarking on programme of work to drive a diverse and inclusive workforce, one which is representative and understanding of the customers we serve in the North West. Meet Andrew, Dave and their collection of toys found in the sewers! From Teletubbies and Paw Patrol to Batman and Spiderman, we are always surprised by the weird and wonderful things that end up in our sewers. Over the years, our vactor operator, Andrew, has been building quite the collection whilst cleaning our wastewater assets. No job is too big or too small for our Vactor Services team from blocked drains to tanks the size of football pitches and everything in between. They can often find themselves underground, up to 40 metres deep! WOW! Teams working at our site along Hoyles Lane, Preston, rewarded with accolades and WOW awards from local residents. During our wastewater project to alleviate historical flooding issues, strengthening our network for growing communities, our colleagues demonstrated exceptional customer service and community engagement, being treated to brews, hot meals and even picnics. One heart-warming moment involved assisting a lady to the next bus stop as our work caused the temporary closure of her closest one. This is one of many schemes across the North West to safeguard the future of our network as communities grow. We’re proud to have supported a community group with their beach cleaning efforts. The Hightown beach cleaners, based in Merseyside, now have a large wheelbarrow, buckets, bin bag holders, sharps boxes, shovels, throw lines, clothing and footwear which is helping to make the hard work of beach cleaning a whole lot easier. Our river ranger Ashleigh handed over the equipment, donated via the United Utilities Better Rivers Community Fund, and joined their litter-pick near Blundell Sands. As we celebrate the last few days of South Asian Heritage Month, we want to look back at the amazing events that our Multi Cultural network have held recently to celebrate this year’s theme of 'Free to be me'. The team hosted a tasty stand of traditional food to all colleagues, raising over £500 for local causes. This was paired with a session of authentic Saree draping, an art form passed down through many generations, with each tuck and fold representing a piece of cultural history. We were also joined recently by award-winning career coach and inclusion consultant Sunita Harley (she/her) Collective Insight who shared her knowledge and experience in celebrating diversity and honouring legacy! #diversity #inclusiveworkplace #southasianhertiagemonth
