𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 + 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲: We're incredibly proud of Francesca Golding for her dedication and passion in supporting the next generation of engineers through her involvement with ICE Early Careers Network (ECN) London network. At Walsh, we believe in nurturing and empowering young professionals. Francesca’s role in #CHAIN24, organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), highlights our commitment to investing our people 𝘢𝘯𝘥 in the future of engineering. #EngineeringExcellence #CareerDevelopment #CivilEngineeringCareers #StructuralEngineeringCareers
Last month in my role as External Institution Ambassador for the ICE Early Careers Network (ECN) London I had the opportunity to help organise CHAIN 24 'Beyond Boundaries' - 'Cross Disciplinary Engineering in Tech and AI'. CHAIN is an annual inter-institutional event designed to engage, inform, and inspire early career engineers. CHAIN 24 London, held at the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Savoy Place, brought together industry experts, institution representatives and young engineers to network and hear insights from speakers working with AI and technology. The day began with introductions from the IMechE Greater London Young Members, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Young Professionals, the Young Rail Professionals (YRP) and the ICE Early Careers Network (ECN) London. Attendees heard talks from different industries, covering uses of AI including optimising signalling in rail networks, filtering data to produce reports and deploying smart robots in the nuclear industry. The talks were rounded off by a fascinating presentation from Jacqueline Sly and Nihal Dhamani about their work with AI at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory! The event also highlighted challenges faced with AI, including integrating technologies into existing industries, building trust with the end user, avoiding data set bias and the increasing energy requirements driven by data centres that power popular tools like ChatGPT. The networking sessions were a great opportunity to speak to attendees about careers in civil and structural engineering, and at Walsh - Structural, Civil & Geotechnical Engineers! It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm from the young engineers and students in attendance. Thanks to all who helped make this this such a successful event, especially Connacht Sheffield, Nivë Siva, Tosin Elusakin (Adedipe), Amira Sheikmohamud and Poppy Harrison - I look forward to CHAIN 25! #CHAIN #Careers #CivilEngineering #StructuralEngineering #STEM #ICE #AI #WomeninEngineering #Technology #NASA

This year, we took steps to raise awareness for 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗘𝗻𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗮𝘆. We celebrated with socially conscious cakes from the amazing Luminary Bakery ( 👋 hi, fabulous cakes ), and even tried our hands at baking with the 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗵 𝗕𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗢𝗳𝗳 (turns out, we’re much better engineers than bakers!). We were inspired by the powerful voices of women in our industry, with special thanks to Yvonne Ainsworth from Taylor Woodrow and Katherine Evans, founder of as 𝗕𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝘀 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘀. Their energy, passion, and insights were truly motivational. Beyond these activities (check out what we did here: https://lnkd.in/eWh7B89T), we know there is still much work to be done in prioritising equality, diversity, and inclusion. It is essential that we all strive for continuous improvement, ensuring that our values and teams truly reflect the communities we serve. We'd love to hear from you with details of your DEI initiatives! #INWED #WomenInEngineering #Equality #Diversity #Inclusion #Engineering #Construction #Innovation

𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 + 𝗣𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲: Sarah Fu and Madeleine Groves took Patrick Marry, one of our summer placement students, on a site visit to the Berkeley Group Plc St Edward redevelopment of the former 𝗣𝗮𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗼𝗻 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. Once the UK’s counter-terrorism HQ, this ambitious project features three towers of 17, 24, and 40 stories, all above a double-level basement. 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗿𝗲-𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁’𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗽𝗵𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗺 𝘄𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗼𝘂𝘁, 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁’𝘀 𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗯𝗼𝗻 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗽𝗿𝗶𝗻𝘁. During the visit, Patrick learned how to inspect the innovative temporary works strategy designed to support these walls, which includes buttress piles and plunge columns for stability and reduced congestion within the basement for the works to come. Our detailed Ground Movement Assessment has been crucial in refining this strategy, given the numerous sensitive assets surrounding the site. 👉 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝘆 https://lnkd.in/gGS8NMQF) or contact Sarah Fu for more information on this project. ☀ 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗵? 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁: 𝟮 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗮𝗹𝗴𝗮𝗿 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝗦𝗸𝘆𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗴𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻! We've reached an important milestone on the Trafalgar Way scheme, which sets a new benchmark with the largest Passivhaus PBSA project in Europe, for urbanest UK. The first primary plate girder beams were installed, which when completed will provide students with an amenity deck linking the two PBSA towers in spectacular style. Taking the the bold step of designing this bridge as a tie between the two towers in order to increase air-tightness for Passivhaus performance, we worked closely with the site team, developing an installation strategy that respected the design principle without impacting site programme. A very personal #INWED Talk Huge thanks to Richard Ball and Walsh - Structural, Civil & Geotechnical Engineers for having me talk about my personal experiences on the occasion of International Women in Engineering. It may not have been your typical engineering talk (because, well, it's me!), but it seems the 'Yvonne style' resonated well. Seriously though, I had a blast, and it sounds like the attendees did too! Extra shoutout to all the men who attended to support women in engineering. Your presence is key in our fight for equity. #EquityMatters #engineering #youcantbewhatyoucantsee
