🆕 Watch now: the second episode of our democracy success stories series highlights how change happened through democracy to better protect women from violence in Nigeria. Democracy is a tool to solve real-world problems and make change that positively impacts billions of lives. In this episode, we hear from our partners in Nigeria about how stronger democratic processes are helping to end violence against women and girls. WFD’s role:🤝 WFD supported the passage of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act - which improved protections for women, girls, and people with disabilities - then researched its implementation nationally. Armed with information, legislators, activists, and government agencies made improvements to ensure the law was working as it should in Oyo and Ondo States – with WFD support. Did you know, if all economic barriers are removed for women in Malaysia, the country’s income per capita could grow by 26.2%? In Malaysia, as MPs, educators, ministers, and civil society have integrated gender-responsive budgeting into their work, they discovered ways they could improve lives through budget-setting and policymaking. WFD supported this change by developing gender-responsive budgeting toolkits for MPs and organising focus groups. An organisation called Teja Station identified some of the needs of women from lower income groups to gain income generating skills. In Malaysia, WFD worked with MPs and civil society organisations to help uncover opportunities for single mothers to earn an income. How? Using gender-responsive budgeting. Gender responsive budgeting (GRB) is a powerful tool. It helps decision-makers understand people’s lived realities and make spending and policy choices that can address those realities. This story is a clear example of how strong democratic governance can solve the problems that matter to people.
