The initiative invited readers of Archant newspapers across the UK to participate in news-gathering by contributing their photos, videos and articles directly to their local newsrooms. Within the first 6 months, readers had contributed over 30,000 photos, videos and articles to iWitness24, helping Archant titles better cover local news, foster deeper engagement online, and power social channels with fresh content from readers. An innovative use of game-dynamics was used to reward users for being active members of the community, and provided at-a-glance trust ratings for journalists to efficiently fact-check and moderate the incoming flow of user-generated content.

Archant effectively monetized this new engagement on iWitness24 through the use of sponsored competitions. More here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/garrett-goodman/newspaper-contest_b_1977924.html
