    Permaculture Design

    Permaculture is a design system that works with Nature rather than against it. An approach to growing, using and conserving resources that harnesses the abundance of our natural world whilst providing for our needs. The Permaculture module aims to equip students with the skills, knowledge and framework to create holistic designs in a range of settings from small gardens to whole farms to community projects.

    Permaculture Design provides the structure & philosophy that underpins the whole course, integrating each of the following modules into full and extensive approach to Practical Sustainability in an every evolving world.

    Woodland Management, Organic Horticulture, Soil and Ecology, Re-localisation, Energy, Green Building, Group Dynamics, Creating Change, Facilitating Community Engagement

    Team leader at our Sunday kitchen, usually managing up to 20 volunteers to make healthy affordable meals for everyone. Which reached up to 100 people each week. We also helped in raising awareness of food waste and social isolation. As a team we volunteered with Tom Hunt and Tristram Stuart, feeding 5000 in Trafalgar Square with food that would’ve otherwise gone to landfill. We worked with 5 local food grocers who donated surplus food that would otherwise have gone to waste. We also helped…

I managed volunteers, helped with stock take, and food procurement, and planned events such as cooking crew food for eco festivals like Cloud Cuckoo Land.

    “To whom it may concern: I am writing this recommendation on behalf of Nicola Spear, who is applying for the Master's Programme in Sustainability. I am a television producer and regular volunteer at The People's Kitchen, a food waste project in Dalston, London. Every week, we collect surplus food from local shopkeepers and volunteers cook it so that we serve low-cost (£3) dinners in a makeshift dining room (normally a dancefloor in a nightclub) to the community and friends. I first met Nicky at the People's Kitchen, where she has been volunteering on a regular basis ever since this project began in November 2010. As a largely unfunded project, The People's Kitchen depends on its volunteers in order to operate every week. Volunteers are responsible for sourcing potential food donors (local shopkeepers), sending out Facebook invitations to potential volunteers each week, sorting out/maintaining kitchen equipment and identifying funding sources. Nicky has been one of our leading volunteers, supervising volunteers who cook and serve dinner to 30-100 people each Sunday. She has worked tirelessly, picking up surplus fruit and vegetables from local shopkeepers on Sunday mornings and making sure that all the equipment is cleaned and put away after dinner. She once cooked lunch and snacks for 200 attendees at the London premiere of the documentary, "Just Do It". This was despite a power failure in the kitchen at the venue and a lack of equipment. Nicky was uncomplaining throughout and made delicious food that was enjoyed by all. She is cheerful, enthusiastic, dependable, hard-working and detail-oriented. She is passionate and knowledgeable about issues regarding sustainability, and inspires many of the young students who volunteer at the Kitchen.”
