In a world where growing numbers of young adults identify within the LGBTQ+ community the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace is becoming harder and harder to overlook. Whilst we as LGBTQ+ people, strive for progress and equality, it is crucial that our current and future employers see why there is such value in creating workplaces that are truly LGBTQ+ inclusive beyond a pride month campaign. Some may argue that being a moral imperative should be enough of a reason, however looking beyond this, fostering LGBTQ+ inclusion brings forth numerous benefits that can drive business success and create a harmonious environment for all employees.

In my work supporting LGBTQ+ young adults I see the corporate world through the eyes of almost 10% of 18 to 25 year olds in the UK. The people that I regularly work with at Blossom make it very clear that beyond searching for a meaningful career, they are consistently attracted to workplaces who value diversity and inclusion because they know that the right working environment will mean they can achieve to their fullest protentional.

I could talk all day about the employee benefits of inclusive cultures, but what do businesses get out of creating LGBTQ+ inclusive workplaces?

1. Growing New Talent And Attracting Top Performers

The importance of having the best possible candidate for any role can never go understated. LGBTQ+ inclusive workplaces attract a diverse pool of talented individuals giving you a far higher chance of finding that gold star employee. When organisations cultivate an space that celebrates LGBTQ+ identities, they become magnets for top performers who seek a workplace where they can bring their beautiful & amazing personality in an authentic way. The people I work with demonstrate that by embracing diversity and inclusivity, companies gain a significantly sharper competitive edge in attracting and retaining the next generations most promising and exceptional talent.

2. Enhancing Creativity and Innovation:

Diverse perspectives ignite creativity and innovation. LGBTQ+ young adults experience life in a totally new way they witnessing the ever changing tide of progress and are part of a consistently evolving community. These amazing people bring unique life experiences, insights, and problem-solving skills that can drive fresh ideas and propel organisations forward. Inclusive workplaces that can genuinely provide an inclusive space empower LGBTQ+ employees to feel able to contribute their perspectives, enabling teams to think outside the box and develop groundbreaking solutions.

3. Strengthening Employee Engagement and Well-being:

When you and your employees feel valued, respected, and included, engagement and well-being will flourish. LGBTQ+ inclusive workplaces promote a sense of belonging, allowing individuals to thrive authentically. This positive environment leads to increased job satisfaction, higher productivity, and improved mental health outcomes. Almost all workplaces who genuinely build an inclusive culture, by building employees who feel supported in their identities and bringing their best selves to work, see a significantly more motivated and dedicated workforce.

Inclusive workplaces naturally build a culture of trust and loyalty. When LGBTQ+ employees witness their colleagues and leaders championing diversity and inclusion, it fosters a sense of trust and confidence in the organisation. This trust translates into loyalty, dedication, and a strong sense of commitment, boosting overall employee morale and fostering long-term relationships. More often than not, when an employee feels valued in a workplace they will be more engaged in problem solving and helping to create a stronger and more resilient internal operation.

5. Expanding Customer Reach and Market Opportunities:

It's undeniable that we operate within a socially conscious landscape. Consumers more often than not seek to align themselves with brands and companies that that demonstrate genuine commitment the values they stand. LGBTQ+ inclusive workplaces that foster inclusion as a consistent factor in their work will not only attract diverse customers but also enable organisations to better understand and cater to the needs of LGBTQ+ communities. That being said, savvy consumers are more likely to do their research, this means you need to demonstrate your commitment to LGBTQ+ inclusion goes beyond pride month. By creating an environment of respect and inclusivity, 365 days of the year, companies can tap into market opportunities and forge stronger connections with a wider customer base.

Conclusion:

With 18 to 25 year olds being twice as likely to identify as LGBTQ+ than previous generations, and this becoming a consistent trend, LGBTQ+ inclusive workplaces are not just about ticking boxes or following trends; they are about building a better future for all. By embracing LGBTQ+ inclusion, organisations unlock the full potential of their workforce, foster creativity and innovation, and create a workplace where everyone can thrive. It's time for organisations to recognize that diversity and inclusivity are not just buzzwords; they are vital ingredients for success, growth, and a brighter, more inclusive world.
