Formed in 1935, the BBC SSO has been based at Glasgow’s City Halls since 2006. The BBC SSO is Scotland’s national broadcasting orchestra and performs throughout Scotland, the UK and abroad, and it maintains a busy schedule of broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Sounds, BBC Radio Scotland, iPlayer, and BBC Television. It is Scotland’s leading champion of new music and has established strong links with local communities through its thriving learning and outreach programme. It is a partner in ‘Big Noise’, Scotland’s project for social change through music; it plays a major role in the BBC’s Ten Pieces initiative; and has a close association with the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, working across a variety of disciplines with conductors, composers, soloists and orchestral players. The orchestra appears regularly at the BBC Proms and the Edinburgh International Festival and it is a recipient of the Royal Philharmonic Society Award and of four Gramophone Award.

Over the last year we've been working closely with HMP Low Moss in Bishopbriggs on two important projects with the men living in prison and their young families. Alongside our Associate Artist Lucy Drever, our players have led family sessions where music and storytelling is used to create meaningful memories between dads and grandads living in prison, and their children and families. Themes included ‘Under the Sea’, ‘On the Farm’ and ‘Into Space’, with sessions developed alongside the Scottish Prison Service staff and in consultation with arts practitioner Jess Thorpe (Lecturer, Arts in Justice at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland). “We know the power of the arts. It’s a brilliant way to connect with people around you, to change your narrative, to see yourself differently, to be playful, and to experience being in the moment with those you love most.” – Lucy Drever Most recently in March, our players returned to the prison for a concert with over 50 men in the gymnasium, exploring a range of classical and contemporary music with insights from Lucy Drever. There was also an opportunity for the audience to meet our players afterwards and find out more about the music, instruments and their careers.
