SDAPÖ була другою за величиною партією в [[Імперська Рада|Імперській раді]] [[Австро-Угорщина|Австро-Угорської імперії]] в 1890-х — 1910-ті рр.
Після [[Перша світова війна|Першої світової війни]] ненадовго керував [[Перша Австрійська республіка|Першою Австрійською Республікою]], але згодом повернувся до опозиції.
Партія була заборонена в 1934 році після [[Лютневе повстання 1934 року в Австрії|громадянської війни в Австрії]] та придушена протягом [[Вітчизняний фронт|австрофашизму]] та [[Австрія у часи націонал-соціалізму|нацистського періоду]].
Партія була перетворена на Соціалістичну партію Австрії в 1945 році і була в уряді як молодший партнер ÖVP до 1966 року.
В 1970 році SPÖ стала найбільшою партією вперше в післявоєнній історії, а [[Бруно Крайський]] став канцлером, здобувши три каденції більшість голосів (1971, 1975 і 1979). З 1987 по 2000 рік SPÖ очолювала велику коаліцію з ÖVP, перш ніж повернутися до опозиції вперше за 30 років.
