Thinking Ahead

Posted on 16 January 2014

There is a dizzying list of potential capital improvement projects the Village of Sag Harbor is currently considering or hopes to deal with in the near future, all in the name of public good. Drainage, Long Wharf, the Sag Harbor Village Police Department, renovation of the Municipal Building, bulkhead repairs, the proposed public park next [...]

Slip Sliding Away

Posted on 08 January 2014

Snow and sidewalks. It’s a combination we here on Sag Harbor’s Main Street know all too well every winter. During big storms, it can be difficult for business and building owners to keep up with demand. Shoveling, salting, then watching as more of the white stuff comes down or, worse yet, the standing water freezes [...]

We’re Thinking of You

Posted on 19 December 2013

It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again. As we head into this weekend, the final packages are being “wrapped and bowed” for placement under the tree. And come next week — we’ll be looking toward the annual winding down of the calendar. This is a time of magic and wonder for the kids, [...]

Cautionary Tale

Posted on 19 December 2013

For over three years now, a proposal to expand the Harbor Heights Service Station has been on the village docket, spending years in front of the planning board before moving onto the zoning board of appeals (ZBA), the body that in this case will make or break owner John Leonard’s dreams of a larger gas [...]

The East End Deer Dilemma

Posted on 11 December 2013

The Long Island Farm Bureau has received $200,000 from the state of New York, and it is poised to use that money to address a problem which has long plagued the entire region — the overabundance of deer on the East End.

Shop Local

Tis the season, as they say, and in coming weeks, packages, boxes and bags will be making their way into homes across the East End as part of the gift giving tradition.

New Horizons

Posted on 02 December 2013

As school districts across Long Island struggle to cope with rising costs — particularly in terms of employee contract obligations and benefits — all while staying under the state’s two percent tax cap, two East End school districts have taken a proactive approach to cutting costs by doing something truly revolutionary.

They are sharing a superintendent.

Chilly Reminder

Posted on 15 November 2013

As seasonably cold weather frosted the East End this week, breaking what has been fall weather marked by temperatures in the 60s and 70s, for many of us it was time to break in the fireplace, and pull out our winter jackets and down quilts. For many others, it is the start of a cold holiday season, and a time of year where each dollar is stretched to accomplish more.

Community Coalition

Posted on 15 November 2013

When the not-for-profit Save Sag Harbor was originally founded in 2007, at its root it was a community-based organization aimed at protecting historic Sag Harbor from becoming just another posh downtown on the East End, dominated by chain stores rather than the locally owned shops that make up the majority of our downtown.

Yes on Both School Propositions 11.07.13

Posted on 06 November 2013

Next Wednesday, November 13, residents of the Sag Harbor School District will be asked to weigh in on two propositions aimed at maintaining, and improving, facilities at both the Sag Harbor Elementary School and Pierson Middle/High School.

We believe both propositions deserve community support.
