The Sag Harbor Express is an award winning weekly newspaper that has served the South Fork of Long Island since 1859, covering the news and events of the towns of East Hampton and Southampton as well as the communities of North Haven and Noyac, and of course, the beautiful and historic village of Sag Harbor.
In its day the newspaper has reported on events as wide ranging as the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and visits from President Chester Arthur, the Hurricane of 1938 and the Blizzard of 1888, the closing down of the whale fishery and the opening up of Montauk harbor, the testing of torpedoes here for World War I and the construction, also here, of the lunar landing module. It has talked about its celebrated inhabitants from actors like Hurd Hatfield and Ben Gazarra to a whole host of authors from James Fenimore Cooper and John Steinbeck to Lanford Wilson and E. L. Doctorow; and its not so celebrated heroes who volunteer for public office, trudge off to war, or simply show up in the evenings to coach Little League. It’s written about fire chiefs, police chiefs and Indian chiefs, and has successfully reported Sag Harbor’s births, deaths, politics and scandals for 150 years.
The Express continues to be a reflection of this remarkable community, gleaning dozens of awards for its tenacious reporting of local governmental and environmental issues, engaging advertising design, photography and special publications. The Sag Harbor Express regularly appears in the top ten of New York State community papers.
