East Hampton Town Police said on Friday that they had prioritized the monitoring of sexual offenders living in town, beginning Thursday night and continuing through Halloween.
Several detectives have been tasked with “intensified supervision of registered sex offenders. Police are visiting the homes of those offenders and conducting random surveillance to ensure compliance with state and local laws,” a release issued by Captain Christopher Anderson stated.
“The safety of our children is a top priority in East Hampton, the release continued.
Captain Anderson said police were not acting on any reported incidents, but were simply taking a “proactive approach” in the matter.
Police recommended:
- That older children go out in groups and stay together while trick-or-treating;
- That younger children always be accompanied by a parent, guardian or other trusted adult;
- That younger children be accompanied to the door to receive treats;
- That children know they should not enter a home unless accompanied by an adult;
- And that children should not approach any vehicle, occupied or not, unless with an adult.
