From bagpipes and Balinese rice cakes to Taiko drumming and Dutch tulips, it’ll be a small world after all for Sag Harbor this Friday, when the annual Multicultural Night returns to the Sag Harbor School District.
This year, 28 different countries will be represented at the festival, which takes place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Pierson Middle-High School gym and auditorium. In addition to a smorgasbord of ethnic eats, this year’s festival will feature music, dancing, games and other activities from around the globe.

When it comes to genetically modified food, “Americans are still dining in the dark.”
At least, that’s according to Kathleen Furey of GMO Free New York, who gave a presentation of the dangers of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) at Christ Episcopal Church in Sag Harbor on Saturday.

Owners of T.J. Maxx in the Bridgehampton Commons hope to add a 17,000 square foot expansion to its existing 33,000 square foot building and will need two variances from the Southampton Town Zoning Board of Appeals in addition to approval by the town’s planning board to move forward with their plans.

According to Richard Warren of Inter-Science Research Associates, which is serving as the environmental planning consultant for Kimco Realty – the company that owns the 30-acre Bridgehampton Commons – the addition will be used to expand its furniture and housewares selections at the discount retail outlet.

On a rainy evening a few weeks ago, while using the crosswalk closest to the Hampton Library, director Kelly Harris and a colleague found themselves trapped halfway across Main Street, Bridgehampton. Clutching a dark umbrella, it appeared to Harris that traffic was either unable to see them, or unwilling to slow down.
The moment underscores an ongoing concern Harris has had with the crosswalk most commonly used by patrons of the Hampton Library – its safety, particularly as it currently has no signage or lighting to alert drivers coming out of arguably Bridgehampton’s most congested intersection that there is, in fact, a crosswalk there.

On Wednesday afternoon, members of the agricultural community gathered together to discuss the opening of a new facility in Calverton that could change the way farms and vineyards on the East End do their business. With 30,000 square feet of storage and processing space, Grapes and Greens was designed to help growers of all stripes make the most of their products.

The Long Island Farm Bureau teamed up with other organizations like The Peconic Land Trust, the Cornell Cooperative Extension, and J. Kings Food Service Professionals, the largest independent food distributor on Long Island. The American Hotel, in partnership with the Joshua Levine Memorial Foundation, will host a dinner and pre-dinner cocktail party Sunday, March 24 to raise funds in part for the Edible School Garden Group and the three “master” gardeners chosen to help local school districts cultivate and expand their school gardens.
The foundation is guided by Myron and Susan Levine, of Sag Harbor, who lost their son Josh in 2010 when he was fatally injured in an accident while working at Quail Hill Farm in Amagansett.
