ABC and CBS News are reporting that Barbara Smith has been found safe in New York City. According to media reports, Ms. Smith, who suffers from Alzheimer’s disease, was found in a diner. There is no additional information available about her condition.

Three neighbors, citing the changing character of their neighborhood, turned out to oppose the application of Steven Barr, who appeared before the Sag Harbor Zoning Board of Appeals on November 18, seeking variances to enlarge the house he owns at 43 Howard Street.

John Tintle, the owner of the Sand Land sand mine in Noyac has typically kept a low profile. But as he seeks state Department of Environmental Conservation approval for a permit to expand his operations amid heavy opposition, he has begun to take his case to the public.

To hear John Tintle tell it, the neighbors of his Sand Land mine, composting and recycling facility in Noyac simply want to make his business go away to increase their own property values.

Tuesday, December 2, is “National Giving Tuesday,” and All For The East End (AFTEE) will bring together the nonprofit community of the East End along with friends and supporters to focus attention on “giving local” as part of the national initiative.

It all started with a bland carrot.
Standing in his restaurant kitchen garden on the Sag Harbor-Bridgehampton Turnpike in September of 2013, restaurateur and chef Colin Ambrose crunched down a newly harvested carrot fresh from the soil. It looked great—bright orange, long and tapered—but the flavor wasn’t there. Mr. Ambrose, who has been at the forefront of the local, fresh food movement on the East End since his days at the helm of the original Estia in Amagansett in the 1990s, hatched a plan then and there to gather together local farmers, gardeners and chefs in a growing experiment aimed at identifying keys to successfully cultivating different carrot varieties.
And the results were delicious.

Rounding out its first year, the Sag Harbor Coalition remains determined to change the conversation about substance abuse on the East End. The group of parents, school officials and community experts formed in reaction to a 2010-11 survey that, among other findings, reported that students in Sag Harbor abuse alcohol and drugs more than the national average.
