Larry Hogan 'not sure' US can handle Trump being prosecuted

Gov. Larry Hogan (R-MD) doubts the United States can handle a former president being criminally charged as prosecutors examine Donald Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and his actions in connection to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

“I’m not sure we can,” Hogan told Meet the Press moderator Chuck Todd on Sunday. “But I think no man is above the law. If that’s where the facts lead, that’s what has to happen.”

When asked if he believes Trump should be charged, Hogan declined to answer, saying he would leave that to the Department of Justice.

“I think that’s for the Justice Department to decide, because I think one thing the American people do want is to take the politics out of it and get to the facts of what happened,” Hogan said.

“I think the committee has done a service in bringing a lot of people forward that are finally talking, and we have more information than we did,” the Maryland governor added.

The Fulton County district attorney is also conducting a criminal investigation into whether Trump and his allies committed crimes while challenging the 2020 election results in Georgia. Trump has denied any wrongdoing.

Hogan noted that a lot of people are talking about the Capitol riot and the Jan. 6 committee hearings. He also touted his actions taken on that day in 2021.

“I sent the Maryland state police, you know riot police,” Hogan said. “I sent the Maryland National Guard, and they were all the first to arrive to defend the leaders of Congress and the vice president.”
