Comer blasts appointing special counsel as a 'ridiculous idea' in Hunter Biden investigation

Rep. James Comer (R-KY) slammed the notion of appointing a special counsel in the federal investigation of Hunter Biden as a "ridiculous idea" on Monday, claiming Attorney General Merrick Garland cannot be trusted.

Comer said the House Oversight Committee is the only entity he believes could fairly lead an investigation into the country's first son, arguing it took the committee five months to find information the Justice Department hid for five years.

"I strongly oppose the appointment of a special counsel," Comer told Fox News. "I think that's the most ridiculous idea that any Republican could think right now. Because if you support a special counsel, you support and trust Merrick Garland to have the sole authority to pick one person who can then take over the investigation and never have to be transparent with the media or Congress until the conclusion of the investigation."

Last week, the House Ways and Means Committee released the transcript of two IRS agents who testified in front of the committee, alleging there was interference in the Biden investigation from the Department of Justice, FBI, and IRS officials.

The two whistleblowers claimed they were directed to avoid asking questions about President Joe Biden and not to obtain search warrants related to Hunter Biden, decisions they claimed were "influenced by politics."

"As if the crimes the Bidens committed weren't bad enough, what's even worse is our federal government, led by Garland, is actively engaged in a cover-up," Comer said. "It is clear that one of the reasons the DOJ sat on this probe with Hunter for so long was to let the statute of limitations expire on some of his tax problems."

One of the whistleblowers also testified that the DOJ knew there had been no manipulation of Hunter Biden's laptop in 2019 and that all information on the computer was reliable evidence.

Comer's reaction comes less than a week after the DOJ announced that the younger Biden will plead guilty to two misdemeanor tax charges. He will also enter a two-year probationary period for a felony charge of possessing a firearm while being a user of illegal drugs. The charge will be expunged from his record if he fulfills the probation.

Hunter Biden will enter his plea at a Delaware courthouse on July 26.
