Bill Maher says 'don't let the door hit you in the ass' to lost woke fans

Comedian Bill Maher told "woke" fans, "Don't let the door hit you in the ass" as more of his left-leaning audience continues to leave him.

"The politics changes so my audience sometimes changes," Maher, 67, told actor Jon Hamm on an episode of the Club Random Podcast.

"I've lost a fair number of this, what I would call the 'superwoke,' and it's good," he added. "Don't let the door hit you in the ass. You were no fun to begin with. You have a terrible sense of humor."

The woke affliction is waning, according to Hamm, who suggested the efficacy of wokeness has reached its zenith.

"The critical mass is like OK ... we get it. ... We get it. There's a useful quality to some of what you're saying," he said. "The overreaction, the overbearing thing of it, is absolutely not useful, and, in fact, it's counterproductive to your own point."

"You're shooting yourself in the foot and then wondering why you walk with a limp," he added.

Maher agreed with Hamm's sentiment.

"I mean, this is certainly the message I've been putting out there," he said. "Whether it's actually happening, the backlash, this is something that comes up. It's so funny you say this. This comes up so often lately. Somebody says this exact thing to me."

The idea that the woke community is receiving the backlash inspired Maher to create his own award called the "Cojones Awards," he said.

"We invented this thing to give people awards for standing up to cancel culture," Maher said. "It was literally a brass ball thing."

Recipients of the Cahones Awards include Trader Joe's and Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos.

"That's an indication to me that, if I can have this little award show for people who stand up to cancel culture, maybe that's true," Maher said. "Maybe this is a wave that's coming."
