50 Cent says Los Angeles is 'finished' after reinstatement of zero bail policy

"LA is finished watch how bad it gets out there. SMH," Jackson said in an Instagram reel.

Los Angeles's zero bail policy was first instituted as a COVID-19 measure and reduced bail to $0 for suspects involved in misdemeanors and nonviolent felonies, according to a report.

The purpose of the policy was to lower the number of inmates in crowded prisons, and it came to an end in July 2022.

Since its return in May, crime has been on the rise, the report noted, but the L.A. County Sheriff's Department maintains it would enforce the policy.

"The Department is aware of the preliminary injunction regarding the cash bail system, and of course will comply with any court-ordered bail schedule," a statement issued by the office upon the policy's return read.

"The County is also working with the court and other stakeholders to explore ways to reduce the number of people held before arraignment because they can't afford bail and to provide the Sheriff greater release options to safely reduce the jail population, while always prioritizing public safety."

Critics of cash bail have long maintained it is unfair to low-income citizens, and a reparations task force under Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) has pushed to terminate it.

"The cash bail system is at the core of many of the class and race-based inequities in the criminal legal system," according to the task force. "The task force accordingly recommends that the legislature take all steps necessary to definitively end cash bail."
