Tony Bennett dead: Legendary singer dies at 96


Legendary singer Tony Bennett has died at age of 96.

Bennett, widely known for classic songs like "I Left My Heart In San Francisco," died in his New York home with no cause of death immediately available, according to the Associated Press.

Born in 1926 in New York City, Bennett first gained widespread appeal in the 1950s and 1960s before mounting a comeback in the 1990s through the 2000s, 2010s and early 2020s.

A staple in the music industry, Bennett released more than 70 albums and was known for his pop and jazz hits. He won 19 competitive Grammys during his illustrious career.

In his later years, collaborative albums with Lady Gaga including Cheek to Cheek (2014) and Love for Sale (2021) garnered mainstream attention and critical acclaim. Both albums won Grammys for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.

With his collaborations with Gaga, he became the oldest artist to have an album reach number one on the Billboard 200 when Cheek to Cheek reached that status in 2014 when he was 88.

The legendary crooner revealed in 2021 that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016, but it is unknown if that caused his death.

Although he slowed down in the latter part of the 2010s, he continued to perform until 2021, when the singer gave his last show in August of that year ahead of the release of Love for Sale.
