Sinéad O’Connor dead: 'Nothing Compares 2U' singer dies at 56

Irish singer Sinead O'Connor has reportedly passed away at 56.

O'Connor was famous for her top music hit Nothing Compares 2 U, written by Prince. The song was number one worldwide in 1990. She had released 10 studio albums and debuted her first album in 1987. Her second album I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got received the most musical success, selling over seven million copies.

Earlier this year, she received an award from RTÉ Choice Music Awards.

She was known for making controversial political statements about the IRA and infamously sparked outrage in 1992, when she tore up a picture of the Pope during her musical performance on Saturday Night Live.
