Leading artificial technology companies have voluntarily committed to working with the Biden administration to implement a series of guardrails designed to protect users and their data.
The White House announced on Friday that it had received commitments from seven leading AI companies to manage the technology's risks and protect U.S. rights and safety. The companies include Amazon, Anthropic, Google, Inflection, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI. The effort is the latest by the White House to establish a legal and social framework for AI as a growing part of everyday life.

The White House is "holding the industry to the highest standards to ensure that innovation doesn't come at the expense of American rights," a Biden administration official told reporters in a call.
The voluntary commitments include security testing of the AI systems before their release, investing in cybersecurity protections for future AI models, and publicly disclosing the capabilities of their systems. It also includes attaching elements like watermarks to AI-generated images to ensure they are identifiable as such. The companies have also agreed to use AI to help combat several of society's greatest challenges, including cancer and climate change.
The companies will be required to undergo external verification of their adherence to the commitment.

The White House also is considering an executive order to "ensure the federal government is doing everything in its power to advance safe, secure and trustworthy AI, and manage its risks to individuals and society," the official said. No additional details or time frames were presented regarding the order.
Congress is also attempting to regulate AI, although legislation has stalled while Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) organizes "forums" to inform Congress on how the technology works.
