WATCH LIVE: Joe Biden addresses extreme heat provisions as US battles soaring temperatures


President Joe Biden will hold a press conference on Thursday to address the extreme heat, as the Washington area is expected to reach the hottest temperatures in seven years.

Biden will announce his plan to address the soaring temperatures, including investments in the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to improve weather forecasting and introducing grants through the Department of the Interior to increase the supply of clean drinking water.

This comes as Washington, Maryland, and Virginia are expected to reach temperatures in the upper 90s, with heat indexes of over 100 degrees forecast for the weekend.

Extreme heat kills more people than any other type of weather, causing heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat stroke if precautions are not taken. Democrats have called on Biden to issue new worker restrictions to protect them from extreme heat.

More than a third of the United States is under a deadly heat wave, with hot weather or extreme heat emergencies issued for 120 million people across 27 states.

The president will speak at 11:45 a.m. Eastern time from the South Court Auditorium on Thursday.
