Detransitioner Chloe Cole breaks down before Congress speaking to mother of transgender child

Chloe Cole, a 19-year-old detransitioner, broke down during House testimony Thursday when she spoke to the mother of a transgender child about the dangers of medical transition procedures.

Cole addressed Myriam Reynolds, another witness on the panel, who is a professional counselor and allowed her child to pursue transgender medical interventions.

"I understood that Mrs. Reynolds is scared for her child and I just want to set the record straight that I don't hate her, I don't think anybody in this room hates her," said Cole, who started medically transitioning at the age of 12. "In fact, I see my own mother and my own father in her and that clearly she really loves her child, and she's doing the best with what she's been given."

Cole began to break down, continuing, "Unfortunately, it's not much, and for that, I'm sorry. I think every parent deserves the utmost grace and guidance with how to help their child. That being said, I don't wish for her child to have the same result that I did."

The 19-year-old gave heartfelt testimony about her experiences with medical transition, including coercion by doctors, genital mutilation, such as a double mastectomy as a young teenager, and the permanent changes drugs have made to her body.

Cole was prompted by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX), who asked her to comment on the inherent worth of everyone going through sexual confusion as a child. Roy closed by asking if Cole believed the American healthcare system had failed her.

"On every single level: By doctors and systemically," Cole replied.

Democrats on the committee attempted to deride the premise for the hearing, which was on the "Dangers and Due Process Violations of 'Gender-Affirming Care' for Children," by arguing the entire American medical establishment promotes gender transitions for children, calling it "safe and effective" and "life-saving mainstream medical treatment for children."

However, Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY) said those arguments are "extremely misleading," prompting Dr. Jennifer Bauwens, director of the Center for Family Studies at the Family Research Council, to explain why.

Bauwens described the incongruence with the standard for scientific research and development, the scientific method which requires questioning outcomes, saying, "This whole discussion about saying that it's 'life-saving' automatically says, 'there's no room for discussion because the science is settled,' which is an amazing statement."
