Trumpworld and the media are working together to beat DeSantis

It is entirely transparent just how desperate the Trump team is to get Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis out of the 2024 presidential race, and establishment media is happy to help them accomplish that — because DeSantis is their No. 1 enemy too.

Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) decided to adopt the talking points of Vice President Kamala Harris to swipe at DeSantis over the state’s history standards. Donalds tweeted that “the attempt to feature the personal benefits of slavery is wrong & needs to be adjusted,” joining the media pile-on that has included NBC News, the Washington Post, and Politico, among others.

This entire lazy criticism strips all context from Florida’s educational standards to focus on a single word: “benefit.” The full excerpt that line is from is as follows: “Examine the various duties and trades performed by slaves (e.g., agricultural work, painting, carpentry, tailoring, domestic service, blacksmithing, transportation). Instruction includes how slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.”

In other words, it is the exact same concept that was in the AP African-American Studies course media so fervently defended and has been expressed by the Library of Congress. Harris’s lies about the curriculum are despicable, and Donalds joined in the fight only to whine about being called out for parroting Harris’s lies. Donalds concluded his “woe is me” tweet with “Just another reason why l'm proud to have endorsed President Donald J. Trump!”

And that gives away the whole game.

Donalds was one of the early endorsers of Trump, so he decided to take a shot at DeSantis using Democratic talking points. Former President Donald Trump came to his defense, as did NBC News, which said Donalds only “politely” parroted Harris’s race-baiting smears before receiving backlash.

Meanwhile, Philip Bump at the Washington Post said that the AP course expressing the same concept as Florida’s history standards weren’t the same because Florida called them “slaves” and the AP course used “enslaved persons.” The Associated Press quoted leaders calling the standards "policy violence."

This has been the game since even before DeSantis entered the race.

Just about everyone is rooting for DeSantis's downfall, from Democrats and legacy media to Trump, his flock of endorsers, and the B-tier, C-tier, and F-tier (hello, Chris Christie) GOP candidates also in the race. Democrats and the media want DeSantis gone because Trump is the easier opponent. Trump wants DeSantis gone because he’s his only serious challenger. The rest of the field wants him gone because they think they can rise from 4% to 54% once he leaves.

Donalds knows what he is doing. He adopted Kamala Harris’s lies in order to swipe at DeSantis, and then cried the victim when he was called on it and praised Trump again. Democrats, the media, and Trumpworld are all working toward the goal of beating DeSantis.

The only question is whether GOP voters end up falling for it.
