Faith, Freedom,
Self-reliance

Individual responsibility is life affirming. Collectivism and dependency encourage debilitating helplessness and a belief that government should fix all our problems. Government should get out of the way. People with new ideas need space to flourish. Red tape must be cut. The Bill of Rights must be defended, differences tolerated, cancel culture rejected. Freedom of conscience, religion, and association must be protected.
In a desperate effort to keep the lights on, democratic countries around the world are inadvertently financing dictatorships.
Canada is warning LGBT community members traveling to the United States to check state laws regarding how they could affect their visit.
Bank of America is at the center of an ongoing January 6 investigation. Yet not because it (or its leadership) was directly involved in the riot. Rather, there has been an ongoing investigation into whether Bank of America supplied the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with financial records of people in the DC area for January 5–7, 2021.
In 1955, economist Milton Friedman saw a problem in public education. He saw a system aiming to create good citizens, to equip students with valuable professional skills, and missing at both for too many families. As a solution, Friedman suggested funding students directly and letting families, not the government, figure out the education best for their needs. He wrote, “Transitioning from a system in which money goes to schools to a system in which money goes to students will improve the quality of education.”
President Joe Biden says he wants a carbon-free future for the United States and acknowledges that to realize that future, nuclear energy is essential. Judging by the hundreds of billions, if not trillions, of taxpayer dollars that Biden is throwing at his version of “green energy,” combined with a willingness to strangle consumer choice, his commitment to his cause would seem rock solid—even though his policies make neither environmental nor economic sense.
The Department of Labor on Aug. 8 finalized an 812-page rule that contains more than 50 significant changes to the 1931 Davis-Bacon Act. Instead of modernizing and improving this deeply flawed law, those changes double down on its shortcomings.
Former President Donald Trump recently pledged to enact a universal 10% tariff on all imports if he regains the presidency. His adviser Larry Kudlow argues the revenue would pay down the national debt, level America’s tariffs with those of other countries, and counter Chinese currency manipulation.

Debates over border security and immigration policy have been looming since President Joe Biden took office and implemented policies that caused a flood of illegal immigrants to show up at the Texas border. The task of securing the border and ensuring immigration laws are upheld has fallen solely on Texas lawmakers, Border Patrol, and the Texas Department of Public Safety.

I was saddened to learn of the passing of Katja Bullock, a friend and former colleague of mine and a legend in Republican politics. I got to know Katja well during my time as secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development under President Donald Trump. Katja initially ran the White House Office of Presidential Personnel, which coordinated all the hiring and staffing decisions for the agency. We interacted often, and she always struck me as an individual with grace, wisdom, and an enduring dedication to the values that make America great.
In the first days of the school year, teachers in many of Fairfax County’s classrooms distributed surveys to students that included questions regarding gender identity and preferred pronouns. The district’s superintendent, Michelle Reid, has stated that she is defying Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s (R-VA) model policies for public education, which require that schools notify parents of such discussions. Fairfax County’s unwillingness to follow state law means that parents will not have a right to know about these survey answers or their children’s social gender transitions at school.

Our friends and neighbors are people of goodwill and profound charitable spirit. At our best, we take it upon ourselves to solve our own problems and the problems of our loved ones and our communities.
