Boston Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu tells police they can start clearing tent cities starting Wednesday
Boston police now have the power to remove tents and makeshift shelters at a well-known encampment for the homeless community that is sprawling with drug use and other criminal activity.
The Boston City Council passed Democratic Mayor Michelle Wu’s rule last week, aiming to clear the intersection of Melnea Cass Boulevard and Massachusetts Avenue, known as “Mass and Cass.” Police are allowed to sweep the area as long as the person living in a tent is offered a place to shelter, and temporary storage must be provided for people’s belongings.

Additionally, it increases safety measures for places of education, requiring state colleges to submit updated safety plans to the Virginia Center for School and Campus Safety.

White House pressed on anti-Israel protests on campus; Bidens host Halloween
Are anti-Israel protesters extremists? That was one of many questions at Monday's White House news briefing that pressed the issue of how strongly President Joe Biden condemns antisemitism. "I've been very, very clear," press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said in response to one query. "We are calling out any form of hate. Any form of hate. It is not acceptable. It should not be acceptable here. And we are going to continue to call that out."
Donald Trump Jr. cracked a wide smile when asked about former Vice President Mike Pence's decision to drop out of the 2024 presidential race. "Didn't really know he was running," Trump told Newsmax's Eric Bolling amid laughs. "I'm really worried about where his .03% is going to go, Eric, it's ... not going to move the needle much anymore. I'm not too concerned about it."
President Joe Biden handed out Halloween candy to trick-or-treaters for nearly 90 minutes at the White House on Monday night, grabbing presidency-themed M&Ms and Hershey Kisses to give to the children. Another child showed Biden their fake ice cream cones, and the president playfully put a cone in his mouth, pretending to eat it.
The president was asked by a reporter what "he was going as" in his black jacket and baseball cap, but Biden did not answer. The weather was a chilly 58 degrees Monday night in Washington, D.C., as the 80-year-old president stood outside for the Halloween event.

Now that former Vice President Mike Pence has dropped out of the presidential race, Republicans are asking who might be next
Now that former Vice President Mike Pence has dropped out of the presidential race, Republicans are asking who might be next. Pence is the first of the major GOP contenders to exit the 2024 primary. But all the GOP candidates have been trailing Donald Trump by significant margins.
Trump’s lead has remained unchanged through multiple indictments, millions of dollars in donations to his opponents, and attacks from his challengers that have simply failed to land. Republican donors may soon start to question whether sending money to other campaigns is worth it, given that no amount of fundraising has managed to help close the gap with Trump.

Pence drops out of presidential race; Youngkin calls for border security
The former Democratic National Committee Chair Donna Brazile claimed the Republican Party is becoming Donald Trump's "MAGA party." Brazile appeared on This Week on Sunday to react to Mike Pence's withdrawal from the 2024 election from the day before. She claimed this was a "huge" week for the "movement" that takes its name from Trump's campaign slogan: Make America Great Again.
President Joe Biden's national security adviser Jake Sullivan reiterated Israel's right to self-defense on Sunday but said the country has to do everything it can to separate civilians from Hamas terrorists. “Israel has a right — indeed a duty — to defend itself against terrorists. Israel also has a responsibility to distinguish between terrorists and ordinary civilians,” he told ABC's Martha Raddatz.
Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) has called for increased border security along the United States's Southern border, noting that illegal immigration has caused a crisis across the nation. The issues of illegal immigration, as well as border security, have been a major talking point of Republican politicians, with Youngkin talking about the issue ahead of Virginia's 2023 state elections next month. Youngkin noted that the state of Virginia has a population of 8.7 million people and that almost the same amount of illegal immigrants have made their way into the U.S., which Youngkin called "unbelievable."
