I'm always worried about buying my husband books like this mainly 'cos he professes to be a bit of an expert in the field and was involved in the Defence of Britain project for the Imperial War Museum a few years ago. However, I needn't have worried with this book! He's had his nose in it since it arrived and only occasionally looks up to say 'This is brilliant'! I know very little about the subject but anything that gets this reaction from my husband has to be good!

A very indepth book and if you are into the defences of the UK in WW2 then you wouldnt go wrong buying this book.
Very interesting with a lot of black and white photos showing the different types of pillboxes/bunkers and defences found across the UK.

This is a thorough book that covers all aspects of military defence in Britain, from coastal defences, air defence etc. to anti invasion measures such as GHQ stop lines. It has a wealth of information but is less of a 'read from cover to cover' book than a 'dip into' when you are interested to find out about, say, a stop line. It can be rather dry in places but my main criticism is that the photos and diagrams are all in black and white. I felt that the whole book would have benefitted from some more diagrams/artists impressions of how some of the derelict pill boxes etc. would have looked in the war, just to give the text a bit of context. However, this said, I can't fault the information and learnt a lot from it.
